Read the entire list of appropriations in the economic stimulus legislation

Step up and read the list of House appropriations listed in the economic stimulus package. It is arranged in an easy to read format which lists who gets what and how much. Amazing when you consider the many 100 million + dollar spending programs are tiny next to the Billion Dollar programs listed on this sheet.

Most of what's there has nothing to do with stimulating the economy. That's why it won't work. And even if it all was things that would stimulate the economy, it's far too little to have any large impact. You can't stimulate a $13 trillion economy by any large amount by spending 3% of that number. It would have a very tiny effect.

And you really can't stimulate the economy with the government spending money anyway. Substantial tax cuts WILL stimulate the economy. This pork plan will not.

Stimulating the economy is only a temporary fix anyway. As soon as the money runs out, the problems will return. The problems are not economic in nature. We have more of a book-keeping problem if anything.

There are simply not enough jobs to go around. Why? Because there is less work that needs to be done. With technology and progress over time, we have reached a point where we no longer need everyone to work full time in order for society to function properly.

Personally, my own company has half as many employees as we did 8 years ago, but we are actually more productive now. Computers and the internet have made that possible. I'd imagine many other businesses are experiencing the same thing.

In a world where people had any common sense, this would be considered a good thing. We could probably shorten the work week to 4 days, or we could allow people to retire at 50 instead of 62. But in our rediculous idea of an economy, instead of allowing everyone to work less, we instead throw some people out on the street, while everyone else works even more than before.

At some time in the future, long after I'm dead, mankind will probably reach a point where nobody has to work. Computers, robots, etc. will probably make that possible. Maybe everyone can be on vacation 24/7. If we dont' revise our economic thinking to see that moving in that direction is actually a good thing, then we are going to be in trouble.
