N.O. and China

New Orleans mayor quarantined in China for possible flu exposure - CNN.com

Curious, why is the mayor of New Orleans in China for an economic development trip? Is China a big purchaser of Po' Boys and Mardi Gras beads?

What difference does it make? :dunno:
Lot's of mayors visit China.
for exactly the same reason It's no big deal

... for economic development. Remember, Bobby "Brady" Jindal turned down the stimulus money for Louisiana.

Maybe it was a business trip to check out building materials for future hurricanes? Perhaps we could get some new defective wood?

Seriously, though. We have a rash of problems with defective drywall imported from China to the southeast after Hurricane Katrina and Rita. The drywall contains Sulfuric acid that smells like rotten eggs when the humidity rises and causes metal appliances and components to become aged and damaged.

Same stuff that has plagued FL.

And justly so, someone down there has to be looking long term Attempt to override La. governor on stimulus fails - BusinessWeek

Quote:

The stimulus money would give unemployment benefits to thousands of people who normally wouldn't be eligible for them, like certain part-time workers and people who leave jobs because of domestic abuse or a family member's disability, and it would expand benefits to some others, including those with dependents.

Opponents, including Jindal's labor secretary Tim Barfield and business groups, argued the acceptance of those funds would force businesses to pay higher unemployment taxes. Barfield said that could cripple their ability to recover from the recession.

Companies' unemployment tax rates are tied to three years of their unemployment claims history. Barfield said if benefits are expanded, businesses' claims history could increase, driving up their tax rates in the future.
But what would Tim Barfield know about business anyway

I know Tim, and Jindal as a matter of fact. Voted for him last cycle. According to the article, aside fron the unemployment funds, Jindal will accept $1 billion of the stimulus funds after criticizing it to begin with.
