This is common, the hose with the hole goes to the oil separator,and the hose that connects the valve covers will get worse if not replaced. And there is a third hose that is under the oil separator...

coolant leak
If you do remove the plate for inspection, do not drive without it ,some of the bolts secure the sway bar...
Your best bet is to pressure test the coolant system, this will show you where the leak...
