In some cases it would be a personal safety issue. With mine, while taking off from a stop sign, the car moved onto the road before diff failure and total loss of mobility.

In my opinion the Diff failure issue is not limited to a particular model or part number, it appears that diff failure is common (some may disagree) in some BMW cars built between 2007-2009....

Last year, E70 prices started at $99k AUD here and only $64k USD in NYC. This is when the AUD was at the strongest 1.10 USD.

I got quoted $550 AUD for the rears and $450 for the front. Same size as mentioned, Bridgestone and fitted.
$1000 each sounds excessive.

The bad part number on the E70 4.8i was 3310 7552530 which was superseded by the better 3310 7602986 later in 2009.

It's more common than reported.

I say that based on the numbers of sold re-manufactured rear diffs.

Mine failed 2 weeks ago. new (re-manufactured) diff is on order.

A $4000-$5000 (AUD) repair job in Australia.
