The compressor changed on build date 10/2002 (according to Rockauto), my build is 09/2003, so I have the newer variable-displacement compressor. I confirmed today by looking under the hood.

I tried the 3/4" fine pitch threaded rod and the difference is massive. It was not "easy" but it was very doable with a large ratchet and a crescent wrench, even without heat/cold. No visible damage...

I used the bearing press tool, but IMO it seemed to take a very high amount of force to get it in. It didn't break the tool but it ruined the forcing screw. Sounds like using a real press is the way...
