I was able to do the zip tie fix with only removing the door panel. you can raise and lower the window by hand to an opening where you can put in zip-ties.(at least on my 2002 X5).

I just did this fix. Will probably last as long as a new crappy plastic OEM piece. And it took about 10 minutes to do..no need to take out Carrier since you can reach all the holes to thread zip tie...
