Many thanks for your contribution. Diagnostic checks so far have not shown anything up which does show some similarity with your problem.

Auto Transmisson problems- up steep incline
Hmmm I have a very similar problem in my 2001 4.4i X5, generally when the fluids are cold and when going up a steep incline (my driveway) slowly then is slips into neutral. I don't have the issue...

BMW Warranty replaced my corroded rails on the X5
Hi, I have a 2001 X5 and after 2 years the roof rails (rear section only) started to bubble or corrode under the powder coat.
My local BMW dealer here in Australia had them changed under warranty...
