Its a very distinct whining noise, I mistook it for wheelnoise.
Drove our X3 from Norway down to Italy and back, last summer. On the way back, halfway through Germany I started hearing the noise....

My German is not very good, but if I understand you right, you have disconnected the battery, and when connecting it again the radio is not working!
Have you tried the security code that should have...
