I did a search for this and didn't find much.
What is everyone's favorite/ easiest method for draining the radiator? I need to flush mine now that the water pump and tstat are replaced, and...

My wife's '01 3.0 X5 did this exact same thing...
My wife's '01 3.0 X5 did this exact same thing tonight on the way home- down to the limping home without power steering!
I have it apart in the garage right now- and sure enough its the bearing...
