Yes, when I turn the fan off, the sound is still present. The noise of the fan system is another deal entirely. It also seems loud, but I'm more concerned about the engine than the hvac.

I could be wrong, but once it's dead, I think it needs to be reprogrammed. Charging the key periodically keeps it from dying, so you might be past the point of no return...

Thought I would add some closure to my experience. I ended up going with Greg's recommendation of the 424A (driver), 421B (passenger), and 418B (rear). All installed VERY easily on a 2005 X5...

My wife had the same issue on her 2005 X3. She ended up getting the entire seat (bottom part) replaced under warranty. I'm guessing the '01 isn't covered, but BMW didn't fix hers, they replaced it.
