I had the same Noise and clunking only happening upon turnuing corners and intermittently... 2 different mechanics failed to solve the problem and had changed...

Turned out to be a very small hairline crack in ABS ring not really visible with naked...

when a tyre is already worn, it will continue to wear on that area regardless of what side you have put it on or whether your wheels have been aligned.

You need fresh new tyres on whatever axle...

mine did that about 6 mts ago, turned out to be a vaccuum hose split to do with turbo as mine is a 3.0d, but I presume yours wouldnt have same type system?
