My first BMW... questions

I'm hoping there are no stupid questions, so here goes. What is sport mode, and what is the +/- when I pull my gear column to the left while in drive?

Surf racks?

I just bought a 2007 X5 3.0si. LOVE IT. I've seen posts on here about bike racks, etc. Does anyone know if you can get surfboard racks?
