A diesel will ALWAYS be better for towing. Anyone who says otherwise is ignorant. The low end of the diesel and massive torque coupled with the better mpg while towing make gas engines look obsolete....

I drove a 14' 328d and absolutely hated the 8 speed transmission. It was always shifting. The 6 speed actually uses the power band and compliments the diesel more.

Do the turbos make that much noise? I've noticed mine makes some noise at lower rpm upon deceleration.

Take it to an independent shop and pay them $200 to do a full inspection. I did that on a 35d in San Fran and the $200 saved me a lot of troubles.
