I did the retrofit on a 35i but the 50 should be identical for what you are doing.
The question about the steering column harness being different is a non issue...

First let me give a big shout out to MilehighM3 who helped me greatly to find the PN to the 12 pin connector and supplied me with two. I am still waiting on USPS to deliver the first one....

This is for a paddle shift retrofit I am also contemplating. For the heated steering I don't think you need to change the SZL module. Will keep you posted.

The pigtail on the clock spring supply Power to the heat control module. Power does not pass through the switch cluster so I do t think I need to even remove it and avoid messing with the steering...
