The front part away from the lock uses tabes molded in to the handle that lock into carrier. When the carrier job was done you can strip the tabes off if you turn the handle in the wrong direction...

I am following this post with great interest. I am chasing a 4.8 crank no start but I have narrowed my down to fuel delivery. Pump or no power to pump I feel lucky based on the rat hole you are in

Regulator on order
BMW parts shows a regulator for 05 4.8. I order one and I am waiting to see what I get. I know the regulator is attached to back of alternator. As long as you can get one it should be serviceable
