It's never a bad idea and idle has the most vacuum but I don't think I'd mess with idle much. I just know I needed to bump both our e53 up a bit before idle waa smooth in drive not moving.

Yup the links. The balls on the end will rust and lock up causing chaos. You can't tell when they are attached but if you replaced the actual sensor than you'd have had a chance to verify the ball...

Seems like rod knock and if caught early enough it's not a terminal disease.

I had an FSR that would overheat. I swapped with wife but when testing I didn't bother to put back into the air flow. Don't do that it overheated a lot faster!
