To me they look like they are a guide to make sure the cover is positioned correctly...they look like they would be up against the head wall.
Don't think they have anything to do with oil.

Thanks to both of you. The work shop manual website shows 9Nm for M6 bolts under that transmission section without calling out oil pan specifically. The photo shows 12Nm, I guess I'll go with 12...

Yes, the tensioner is right there. I looked at it before I put the valve cover back on and it appeared to be fine, no excessive wear that I could see. The noise has gone away at this point...not...

Are you talking about the vacuum pump or the secondary air pump? I think the secondary air pump is electrically driven and not tied to the engine RPM which this specific noise definitely is.

Going to replace the air cooled alternator on 2006 4.4 N62 engine due to oil damage. Vehicle has 75000 miles on it, is there anything else I should change like tensioner pulleys, etc?

4x4 MIL on but no code

My wife has a 2006 X5 4.4 with 65k miles on it, the other day she said the 4x4 malfunction indicator light came on. After she got it home the MIL was off (vehicle was turned on/off a couple times)...
