Mine is the a/c blower, you needed to turn off the fan till the light goes off and my sound goes away. It's intermittent, occurs once every 2-3 weeks..for now.

I have a functioning head unit, swapped it out when I upgraded to a NAV unit. But are you sure its the display unit, if no sound its probably more than a display swap.

Yes, the $20 GPS on eBay works with CCC. Try placing it on the dash. I attached a picture, the cable is hidden and it's half the size of your ignition key fob. Hardly noticeable.
