Are you the original owner? Do you know if a previous owner may have used a stop leak product to fix the radiator or used a coolant that isn't compatible with BMW coolant? Could be the heater core...

You will need to get a scanner that has bi directional control and see if the valve is opened or closed when the rpm is above 2500.

Since the heater works when it is unplugged it could be that the valve is closed so coolant is not allowed to circulate in the heater core when it is plugged in.

I had a stuck open thermostat in a car one winter which didn't have any heat on the highway but heat in city driving.
