It sounds like one of the double stick tape discs that come with Garmins. Since you tried a heat gun alone, maybe try the heat gun with some Goo Gone or citrus based adhesive remover in combination...

I would try eBay in Oz or junkyard/wreckers. Unfortunately I have a set for sale but they are gray and shipping would be prohibitively expensive. :(

Replacing the sockets will solve your problem. Cleaning or scuffing up the contacts will not, as you discovered. I tried that too. You won't notice...
