have the car back now. Dealer warned me to put non BMW shocks in. He said that there are a lot of different shocks available because of the different versions of X5's (weight ??!)....

From your picture it seems you are missing the cover of the key cylinder. But that doesn't look like somebody would have tried to break into your car. That would look worse then.
