Tire Insurance?

Apparently the manufacturers no longer offer a "road hazard warranty" on new tires. So the dealer wants to sell me an insurance policy for $750. Has anyone bought this? My sniff test is another dealer gimmick.

Views?

chris24 03-14-2007 08:45 AM

That seems ridiculous to me. I'm not sure what the exact current exchange rate is (somewhere around 9% last I saw), but tire rack has the OE Dunlop run flats for $429 front, $434 rear USD(assuming you have the sport package and 20" wheels on your 4.8i, otherwise, might be a little cheaper). So to buy that insurance policy you'd be paying as much a tire and a half. Seems like you'd be better off taking your chances......

X5FX 03-14-2007 10:40 AM

Read the warranty that came with the tire, it is pretty good and covers punctures (see last section)

Denalio 03-14-2007 01:13 PM

The warranty covers tire damage and replacement if punctured (in Canada it is illegal to plug a run-flat) It also covers damage to the rims. Replacement coverage is 5 years or $6000.00. I paid $500.00 CDN for mine and I think it is a worthwhile investment.

X5FX 03-14-2007 01:28 PM

The tires basic warranty, which is included free covers these same things for 2 years as I read it.

Does it cover the actual rim? Have you ever tried to make a claim on one of these warranty's from the manufacturer? It is almost impossible to collect I have been through this a couple of times.

X5FX 03-14-2007 01:55 PM

no, it does not include rim...only the tire.

jlalanas 03-14-2007 02:08 PM

I bought this, was $595 at my dealer who told me it includes tires and rims. Considering the runflats can't be patched or plugged, or so they say, i think it's a reasonable deal, especially the fact that it includes the rims.

X5FX 03-14-2007 02:13 PM

All I am saying guys is that Michelin covers nails and will repair or replace road hazards for free for 2 years.. so factor that in to your equation.

For me, $500-$700 for insurance that is basicly covering my rims only is not a value. I cant recall the last time I damaged a rim.

look at the link in post 4...read page 6 of the pdf.

chris24 03-14-2007 02:35 PM

from what I've been told by dealers, run flats can be repaired, but it's not a good idea. Best to check with the tire manufacturers I would think.

Not in Canada, not allowed to repair. Although i am sure it can be done. It's just not safe.

It is allowed in the states...it is only a safety issue if the sidewall is damaged any tire can be safely patched if it is inside of the contact patch of the tire...as for that warrenty...unless you are very unlucky flats are fairly uncommon as are blowouts...so it is kind of a sucker bet especially if it costs more then one of your tires.

Michilin Diamaris...come on the E53 is 20" rims

trueX5er 03-14-2007 05:20 PM

Yes, but this is the E70 Forum
Who was talking about Diamaris?

X5FX 03-14-2007 05:26 PM

Mine are Michelin Latitide Tour HP
255/50R19 107H

these are run flats (ZP)

chris24 03-14-2007 05:59 PM

Really? So Michelins must come with the sport pack? Or did you add them on?

X5FX 03-14-2007 07:05 PM

no, they are stock

Praetorian 03-14-2007 07:48 PM

I purchased the warranty. I suspect that my tires will run over a tire before they wear out....

X5FX 03-14-2007 07:50 PM

I hate it when my tires run over a tire

My experience on run flats, has been that the tyre drops and runs on its internal rims. Once this happens, the tyre walls are broken and the whole tyre is un -repairable. Had two tyres covered under insurance.

X5FX 03-14-2007 07:54 PM

is that tire not as nice?

do you have sport?
do you have 19"
did you do somthing w/ the dealers wife your not telling us?

X5FX 03-14-2007 07:55 PM

tell us the truth, do you really have an X5 or are you pretending to own one:

Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 Tires are Original Equipment On 2007 Mazda CX-9
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 1, 2006) – Mazda’s all-new seven-passenger CX-9 sport utility vehicle (SUV) will ride on Bridgestone-brand Dueler™ H/L 400™ tires from Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC (BFNT).
The 2007 Mazda CX-9, available in three models – Sport, Touring and Grand Touring – will be fitted exclusively with Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 tires in sizes P245/60R18 104H and P245/50R20 102V.
The Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 is a luxury, touring, original equipment tire that gives CX-9 owners command of the road with easy-going comfort. It features an all-season tread pattern for wet and dry traction.
“The Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 tire was designed for SUVs but delivers the ride and handling qualities of a passenger car tire,” said Michael Martini, President, Original Equipment Consumer Tire, BFNT. “It is a perfect match to the Mazda CX-9, which offers the seating and cargo space of an SUV, but drives like a sedan.”
The new Mazda CX-9 will be available in dealer showrooms in early 2007.

trueX5er 03-14-2007 07:58 PM

They are much better tires than the ones on my E53. Why am I the only person who has them?

X5FX 03-14-2007 07:59 PM

could it be you didnt get run flats because you dont have a 3rd row, therefor you have a spare

Wait so I thought X5s come w/ RF no matter what?

X5FX 03-14-2007 08:04 PM

good news is they are alot cheaper to replace.

$150 vs $277 each

X5FX 03-14-2007 08:04 PM

no, looks like yours are not

the run flats are Dueler H/L 400 RFT

Stevev 03-14-2007 08:06 PM

I was surprised that they put a Michelin tires on my E70 3.0si. Most of people getting Bridgestone tires. Maybe I am just lucky.

trueX5er 03-14-2007 08:06 PM

ok, cool!

X5FX 03-14-2007 08:08 PM

no it looks like you are right-

STANDARD SPEC:
18 x 8.5 Star Spoke (Style 210) light-alloy wheels, and 255/55R-18 run-flat all-season tires

what does it say on the side of the tire?

These run-flats do not have internal rims. The sidewalls are reinforced. However, that being said, I agree with you the sidewalls still break down. It has happend to me as well.

trueX5er 03-14-2007 11:21 PM

It says:
"BRIDGESTONE"........."DUELER H/L 400"......"255/55R18"

Bridgestone's site isn't very helpful, they just say it's standard equip on the MDX and Q7. I thought all X5s did have RF, even ones with the spare (like mine). huh.

trueX5er 03-14-2007 11:24 PM

Wait-----I found this page:

http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?ti...Sport+Run+Flat

it says the run flats that come on the "BMW X5" are the Dueler H/P

I have H/L

X5FX 03-14-2007 11:26 PM

look at my post above #33

I cut that off the BMW site...says run flats STANDARD EQUIPMENT

look at your tire closely...should haf a RFT on it

X5FX 03-14-2007 11:32 PM

here they are:

My X5 is about a month old.

The dealer offered me tire insurace for $1000. It covered punctures...but only punctures NOT in the sidewall. It did not cover damage due to construction plates, etc. It did not cover tires damaged by hitting a curb. It covered rim damage...but not from curb rash.

Since my only tire issues in the last few years were curb or sidewall releated...I declined.

Of course, at 600 miles I got a large screw into one of my Bridgestone Run Flats. Murphy's law strikes again.

The dealer said they did not work on runflats. I began to have visions of having to get a new $200-400 tire....but...

They pointed me towards a local tire shop that was "Bridgestone Run-Flat Certified". They took me right in and repaired the tire in what I would consider a generally "traditional" manner. The price was steep ($75)...but they treated my car, tire and rim with kid gloves.

So yes, the insurance would have covered this repair...so far I am still ahead by not getting the insurance...but 40,000 miles to go yet.

X5FX 05-02-2007 10:25 AM

Bridstone does not warranty the tire?

look at post 3 above.

The above post discusses Michelin tires...I have Bridgestone's

That said...I never thought about a warranty covering the puncture. I just assumed it was "my fault". I probably should have thought to check.

I just went out to my X5 to find the warranty. I could not find any tire warranty paperwork. Did anyone with Bridgestone's get a tire warranty in their paperwork ?

X5FX 05-02-2007 11:11 AM

search the bridgestone site...thats where I found the Michelin warranty

I also have Bridgestone Tires and no tire paperworks as well. I bought a tire insurance from a friend of mine who works for a big Dealership and he basically sold it to me for cost plus $25 profit. I paid $175.
