Tire Insurance?
Apparently the manufacturers no longer offer a "road hazard warranty" on new tires. So the dealer wants to sell me an insurance policy for $750. Has anyone bought this? My sniff test is another dealer gimmick.

That seems ridiculous to me. I'm not sure what the exact current exchange rate is (somewhere around 9% last I saw), but tire rack has the OE Dunlop run flats for $429 front, $434 rear USD(assuming you have the sport package and 20" wheels on your 4.8i, otherwise, might be a little cheaper). So to buy that insurance policy you'd be paying as much a tire and a half. Seems like you'd be better off taking your chances......

Read the warranty that came with the tire, it is pretty good and covers punctures (see last section)
note page 6: http://www.michelinman.com/assets/pd...inwarranty.pdf |
The warranty covers tire damage and replacement if punctured (in Canada it is illegal to plug a run-flat) It also covers damage to the rims. Replacement coverage is 5 years or $6000.00. I paid $500.00 CDN for mine and I think it is a worthwhile investment.

The tires basic warranty, which is included free covers these same things for 2 years as I read it.

no, it does not include rim...only the tire.
|
I bought this, was $595 at my dealer who told me it includes tires and rims. Considering the runflats can't be patched or plugged, or so they say, i think it's a reasonable deal, especially the fact that it includes the rims.
|
All I am saying guys is that Michelin covers nails and will repair or replace road hazards for free for 2 years.. so factor that in to your equation.
For me, $500-$700 for insurance that is basicly covering my rims only is not a value. I cant recall the last time I damaged a rim. look at the link in post 4...read page 6 of the pdf. |
from what I've been told by dealers, run flats can be repaired, but it's not a good idea. Best to check with the tire manufacturers I would think.

no, they are stock

I purchased the warranty. I suspect that my tires will run over a tire before they wear out....

I hate it when my tires run over a tire

no, looks like yours are not

I was surprised that they put a Michelin tires on my E70 3.0si. Most of people getting Bridgestone tires. Maybe I am just lucky.

|
no it looks like you are right-
STANDARD SPEC: 18 x 8.5 Star Spoke (Style 210) light-alloy wheels, and 255/55R-18 run-flat all-season tires what does it say on the side of the tire? http://www.bmwusa.com/bmw2003/images/clear.gif http://www.bmwusa.com/bmw2003/images/clear.gif |

It says:
"BRIDGESTONE"........."DUELER H/L 400"......"255/55R18" Bridgestone's site isn't very helpful, they just say it's standard equip on the MDX and Q7. I thought all X5s did have RF, even ones with the spare (like mine). huh. |
Wait-----I found this page:
http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?ti...Sport+Run+Flat it says the run flats that come on the "BMW X5" are the Dueler H/P I have H/L |
look at my post above #33
I cut that off the BMW site...says run flats STANDARD EQUIPMENT look at your tire closely...should haf a RFT on it |
here they are:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Sizes....+H%2FL+400+RFT |
My X5 is about a month old.
The dealer offered me tire insurace for $1000. It covered punctures...but only punctures NOT in the sidewall. It did not cover damage due to construction plates, etc. It did not cover tires damaged by hitting a curb. It covered rim damage...but not from curb rash. Since my only tire issues in the last few years were curb or sidewall releated...I declined. Of course, at 600 miles I got a large screw into one of my Bridgestone Run Flats. Murphy's law strikes again. The dealer said they did not work on runflats. I began to have visions of having to get a new $200-400 tire....but... They pointed me towards a local tire shop that was "Bridgestone Run-Flat Certified". They took me right in and repaired the tire in what I would consider a generally "traditional" manner. The price was steep ($75)...but they treated my car, tire and rim with kid gloves. So yes, the insurance would have covered this repair...so far I am still ahead by not getting the insurance...but 40,000 miles to go yet. |
Bridstone does not warranty the tire?
look at post 3 above. |

That said...I never thought about a warranty covering the puncture. I just assumed it was "my fault". I probably should have thought to check. I just went out to my X5 to find the warranty. I could not find any tire warranty paperwork. Did anyone with Bridgestone's get a tire warranty in their paperwork ? |
search the bridgestone site...thats where I found the Michelin warranty
