Orange Brake light just came on!

An orange circle came on yesterday, so I checked the manual and it says it needs brake checks. I've got a 2002 with 40k miles. My brakes are fine, it drives fine. Can I just take it to JUST BRAKES and have them replace my brake pads and its sensor? Then I change the rotors when I feel like it needs it.

That happened to me at about 40k miles, too. I took it to the dealer, told them to work their magic, and it was fine!

So?

did they changes your brake pads or rotors?

Could be a faulty sensor. I would take it BMW first to make sure. (Or if you have a good independant mech.) Usu. you need to change out pads and rotors together.

Question: If your brakes are fine then why would you want to take it to JUST BRAKES and have them replace my brake pads and its sensor? :dunno: You may want to change the rotors when you feel like it needs it but your vehicle may have other ideas. I don't know about just brakes but i prefer going to an independant BMW shop and getting a professional inspection.

The brake pad wear indicator will come on, prior to your pads being worn down to the backplate, to avoid disc (rotor) damage. You will need to change the pads, change the pad wear sensor (it will be worn down to it's trip point) and have the discs checked for minimum thickness using a micrometer or vernier calipers. The minimum disc thickness will be written on the circumference (outer edge) of the disc. This job can be done by a BMW dealer or by a brake shop. It's your choice. Just make sure, that if the job is done by other than a dealer, that you are getting good quality after-market parts or genuine parts.
Colin.
