20s and Toyo Proxes S/T? Why so damn loud?

I love the handling and the looks but good lord are they loud! I put Toyo Proxes S/T tires on stock BMW 20s (like the 4.6is has on it). It sounds like wagon wheels are on my beloved X5, and driving to the airport last Friday my Dad told me there must be something wrong with my driveline........needless to say I was embarrassed. I have the music cranked up pretty loud usually and don't pay too much attention but these suckers are NOISY.

Are the BMW 20s noisy or is it my tires? Opinions?

NINCHS 04-30-2007 06:38 PM

its your tires. my OEM 20's arnt loud.

cpatzer 04-30-2007 06:45 PM

Get better tires. The Toyo's suck IMHO. You might look towards the Michelin Touring HPs. I have them and they are dead silent.

Eric Giles 04-30-2007 07:07 PM

Oh boy-and I just ordered a wheel/tire package that had the Toyo S/T tire with no other option...the Hankook's I currently have are quite noisy and I was hoping these would be better, but looks like it probably won't. I just called the company I purchased them from, and they have already shipped out so I can't cancel the order.

That's just great.

Dylandog 04-30-2007 07:18 PM

Whats wrong with Michelins or Pirelli's? I don't think BMW offers Toyo's on a stock X5. Stick with what works.

well...don't accept the package and resend back to sender...

that shouldn't be a problem

ALE53 04-30-2007 07:21 PM

Thought so, although my S500 has T1R Toyos in 18 and they are dead silent as well. ???????

zerochief 04-30-2007 07:30 PM

I didn't notice any noise issues with my Toyos on 20" stag 87's.

That's good to hear.

Due to my concerns, I just called the place I bought them from (cleanin out the garage on ebay) and talked with a couple of people there. They said they haven't had any complaints about the Toyo's, but he did say that although the Toyo's are not the quietest tires available, they are not noisy. As soon as I get them on I am going to go have my alignment checked so that they will not be wearing unevenly, which can definitely cause excess noise.

On another note, he mentioned that the AFS wheels they sell no longer need hubcentric rings as of about 8 months ago as the wheels are now hubcentric for most BMW's, including the E53 X5's-now THAT is a relief! I have dealt with aftermarket wheels before that utilize hubcentric rings, and it just never turned out that well for me.

:iagree: nor did i. w/ the radio on and windows down, i don't hear anything.

motordavid 04-30-2007 08:53 PM

Did you check the obvious: proper tire direction shown on
side wall? Maybe the tire(s) are defective?

My neighbor just got a new 530 and the brand new oems
were "square", diagnosed after 3 stlr trips.

If the suckers are mounted and balanced properly, it may
be the tire(s). I don't think an alignment is going to solve
it, but GL.

how many miles do you have on the Toyos? Mine started to get really loud around 25k miles although they looked like they had plenty of wear left. However after a closer inspection, uneven tire wear on the inside seemed to be the main cause.

X5Dawg 05-01-2007 09:39 AM

Definitely get your alignment checked. I complained about my first set of Toyos being loud and it ended up that my alignment was off and ate through the rear tires within 21K miles. The fronts were cupping on the edges. My shop moved the fronts to the rear (I still have crappy 17" wheels) and put the new ones up front, aligned it, and the noise is gone.

Toyos are loud and only get louder as time passes not to mention that they are a shit tire to begin with.

The Michelins are discontinued and the replacement model look terrible.

Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's that's the way to go.....

mdrobc13 05-01-2007 11:32 PM

I too never had any problems on my staggered type 87's w/20" Toyo on them since what last Sept? So good they are to me...I am put them on my new 4.4i that I traded my 3.0i for.

Big Al 05-01-2007 11:56 PM

Just mounted a set of staggered toyo proxes ST's on 20 inch replica rims. I have no complaints and have been quite happy with them.

nisar 05-02-2007 12:03 AM

hello,
have toyo on my 19" with less then 6k and they are making noise.

Junster 05-02-2007 08:11 AM

Now I know why it's loud -- I just noticed that on mine cruisin when I dropped all the windows last night. I'll keep them until I need to replace them. Just crank the stereo high with windows up.

Krunk Man 05-02-2007 11:27 AM

You cant have everything in a tire.
The toyos are dirt cheap, handle wheel, and look sick.

I would somewhat tend to disagree with that statement. True you can't have a dirt cheap price and have it all, but I do have it all with the Touring HPs. Granted they were $350.00 a piece but I can also tear it up in the snow.

2002Silver4.6is 05-02-2007 01:31 PM

I don't get it. I had Toyo's on my Expedition for 30k miles and had no noise. They were almost as wide as the X5's at 285mm. I am going to replace my current Michelins with Toyos. I will have a set of used 275's for sale that have 6k miles on them and are in great shape.

dkl 05-02-2007 03:32 PM

Your Expedition probably had 0 degree of camber. The X, on the other hand can get anywhere from -2 to -4 degree of camber out back. Any slight sign of cupping on the inner edges of the tires and the noises will proliferate in no time. With these wide tires and negative camber settings, it's just a matter of time. Some tires fair better than others, but they're all bound to generate some noise as they age on the Bimmer setup.

pseto 05-02-2007 03:35 PM

Anyone else think the noise is mainly those who have a staggered 20" setup like myself? Although it looked like I had sufficient tire trend left, the negative camber really wore the inside of the tires out causing a lot of the noise after 20k+ miles.

The e53 has a lot of negative camber (more than any other car I've seen) whereas other car manufacturers wouldn't have, thus less noise.

dkl 05-02-2007 03:39 PM

My staggered 19" set up does the same thing (OEM Bridgestone Turanza). The first 10K were fine, the last 20K got louder and louder. Just replaced them with Pirelli Scorpion A...I'll just have to wait and see how these will do, but so far so good after 2K.

Of course, to my knowledge that would leave you with Continental as your only option. Seems like the Michelin Diamari's are BMW's tire of choice for the X5, and they are French.

I have owned a few sets of Toyo's before and I was always very pleased with them.

we350z 05-02-2007 05:11 PM

Yea.

I have toyos t1-s on my 300ZX, pretty happy with them so far for the price. A lot of people went with Michelin Pole Positions tho.

xymox 05-02-2007 08:44 PM

I have the stag 20's and they are not loud at all..

EZDozzit 05-03-2007 12:59 AM

Stag Toyos here too, on 20" reps and not loud at all. Tires look very nice.
