Tires siping ?
Hi, I live in Oregon and we're rarely get snow.
like to hear if anyone has them done and how you like it. thanks |
i believe consumer reports studied this and said it was not worth it. if you are worried about tires, just get a set of winter tires for those cool times of year...
craigslist usually has lots of people selling rims and tires cheap. the rubber may not be what you are looking for, but you can get a second set of rims real cheap and maybe get lucky with the tires too... |

Your tires are "siping".......... Hmmm
|
I Had My tires siped on My 3 Series and all I Noticed is that it made a squeaking noise, kinda like when you drive new tires in smooth Concrete.... If that make any sense??

The practice of siping, or cutting extra slits into tire treads, is supposed to improve a tire’s snow and ice-biting ability. Tire dealerships typically charge around $15 or more to sipe tires. To see whether siping makes any difference, we tested two performance all-season models, an H-rated Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus and a V-rated Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S, with and without siping. The siped version of both models showed modest but measurable improvements in snow-traction and ice-braking performance. But braking distances on wet and dry pavement were a few feet longer. Besides costing $60 or so for a set of four, having your tires siped potentially voids any tread-wear warranty. We don’t think the modest gains are worth the extra costs. |
Most shops that sipe just run the cutters around the tire, letting the sipes fall where they may (sometimes in the middle of the tread block where they might help, sometimes on the corner or edge of the block which does nothing). We feel that if siping helps the tire, we let the tire manufacturer put that in as part of the tread design from the beginning. Unless the ship can target the center of each tread block for a sipe, its just too erratic to be really helpful.
