275/40/20 Front and 295/40/20 Rear for OEM Style 87s?
I am looking at picking up a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow for my 4.8is. I am going to be mounting these tires on OEM Style 87s. I did a search and it seems like everyone is running 275/40/20 all around even though the rims are staggered. However, I saw on Tire Rack that these tires are available in 295/40/20 as well. So my question is, howcome no one runs 295/40/20 in the rears? Isn't 295 closer to the suggested 315 for the rears? The 295 tire would require less stretching than the 275 one. Am I missing something here? Someone please tell me what sizes I should buy.

Thanks for the reply. I know that everyone runs 275/40/20 front and 315/35/30 rear but the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow winter tires don't come in 315/35/30 so people run 275/40/20 all around for this tire even though the rears are wider. However, I noticed that the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow winter tires are also available in 295/40/20 and I was wondering why people don't run this size in the rears instead of 275's all around. Does anyone have an answer to this. I know a lot of you are running the Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow winter tires on 20's. Please let me know why people don't run 295's in the rear but opt for 275's all around. Were the 295/40/20 recently added or something? TIA again |
AFAIK, the skinnier tires are better for the snow and traction purposes, maybe that could be a reason? 20" for snow is pretty big as it is, most people run 17"-18".

You'll need to adjust the aspect ration on the rear 295's.

The 295/40's will be a little too tall. |
So does 275/40/20 x 4 work on type 87 for snow?

Weebie,
Great set up for me with Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow RFT 275/40R20's & 315/35R20 on my 4.8is. http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-related-...ice-snows.html Keeping the wide tread look while pulling through snow and climing steep hills. The exact combo I was hoping for. |
