Toyo Proxes S/T vs. STII

I can get the S/T in 255/55R18 for $155 a piece.

Is there a reason to go with the S/T IIs instead? I like the tread pattern on the older S/T version and have seen comments with people get 30K miles on the older S/Ts without any issues.

well, you live in florida, so i would say yeah that is no problem to have the S/T. For us up in the northeast, the weather is crappy so I have the S/T II (Even though i do take them off in the winter).

I heard the ST IIs are quieter, but i cannot judge because i never had the STs. I'm really happy with my ST II, but if you have a great deal, then go for it!

They are both all-season tires, but the S/T II's have an updated tread pattern that is supposed to be much quieter as the tires age. I have the original S/T's and they became very loud after about 20,000 miles. I have gotten over 35,000 miles on my S/T's (19" sport package stag set up) without any rotation. Performace has been great, but the noise over the second half of the tires life is horrible. Switching to the S/T II's when these are completely worn. I recommend getting the II's for noise issues alone.

I have had two sets of the ST and they are excellent tires. I got 68,000 miles out of my first set. I have 255/55/18. Second set not so long. On Saturday I bought a set of the ST II. I preferred the old trend pattern but I could not find any, where I live. I have the ST II on my Mercedes and they handle great, are better in the rain and are quieter.

Go to Tire List | Treadepot.com

I got mine for $ 122.00 per tire. Use this code DCTD25 and you get an additional $25 off.

Yep, I like the older pattern better as well. Wally, did you have a noise buildup over time like FSETH above?

The other comparable tread pattern is in the Eagle F1 GS-D3 but they run $212 a piece.

The 18's may be slightly less noisy when compared to my wider 19's. Noise on the original S/T's seem to be Achilles heel of the tires.

I looked at the S/T's and S/T II's side by side in my tire shop. I kinda like the new pattern. It seems more modern or something. Also, the edge of the tires are much more rounded on the II's. Not quite as square looking as the S/T's.

Thanks guys - went with the S/T IIs after researching a bit more. Wally's discount code pushed me over the top ... ;).

They get here Monday but I'll probably wait a bit before having them mounted. Anything special about mount/balance to consider? I know the Vette had a sensor for air pressure but does the X5?

I had 3 sets of STs, last one being a staggered set of 20's. Yes, excellent tires - I got 40K+ on my 17s and 37K from my 20s; however as FSETH stated, the noise is horrendous after 20K miles. I currently have the STIIs on and I am really liking these - just waiting to see how the noise is going to be after some miles are put on them.
