REAR SUSPENSION NOISE.... HELP PLEASE

Hi all,
I am hearing a noise from the rear suspesion. Normally when turning right but occasionally when turning left at slow speeds normally when turning into a side road of a main road. When it first started it sounded like a slight rubbing noise but now it sounds like a cracking noise?? Like a metallic noise?? I have had a brief chance to jack the rear up and I can not find any play in any joints/bearings. The rear subframe bushes have been changed about 6 months ago so I believe they are ok.
Has anyone got any ideas please ? Has anyone ever experienced this fault ? Any help or ideas would be great

What is the year and model of your X5? Have the rear bearings been changed? I'm not sure how to interpret a cracking noise? Are you sure that your rear pads are not worn completely and are etching the rear rotors? (I've heard it before)

Hi, Its a 2001 3.0d sport model. Cracking/knocking noise metal to metal? Almost like a high pitched exhaust knock or a stone hitting hollow metal might be the best way to describe it. Pads are fine renewed 7500 miles ago. Rear subframe bushes replaced recently. No obvious play in bearing etc... Its getting really annoying. Not just the noise. The nagging from the wife is a getting REAL bad now :D. Jokes aside this is our big pram so want it safe.

Right, to describe the noise in a maybe better way. It is coming from the o/s rear/centre of the car. it mainly happens when turning right more than when turning left. Occasional when going over bumps in road. To give some history. All FRONT arms have been deallt with including sway bar links.. (see previous posts) All bmw parts, I have had the rear subframe bushes changed about 6 months ago OEM parts. Brakes all seem fine not worn etc..., No strange vibrations or shudders at the speeds I was driving at today anyway. No stones stuck in tyres etc... Wheels and tyres balanced and at correct pressures.
Going to try and get my local garage to have a look at it tomorrow, Hopefully they will be able to help. In the meantime has anyone got any ideas what the problem might be???

Update. Apart form now feeling like a total idiot :banghead: I am happy that we have located fault. It is rear sway bar links. On order from BM's now. Should have them fitted by the weekend. It was the only thing I didn't check or think of. Anyway thank you for all your help

Great that you have your answer. I didn't think of those either and was next going to suggest looking over the air suspension system.
