X5 meets Curb.....Curb wins

We just had a big snow storm in central pennsylvania. I was in a parking lot when I lost traction on all four wheels and went sliding (much further than I expected) and was stopped by a low concrete curb. Here are the results:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_PAqoqJI04es/S3...olArms%201.jpg

The wheel is tilted out rather than in because I drove a short distance until the computer shut me down.

On the flatbed truck I was able to get a good photo of what went wrong:

Broken control arms. I'm waiting to hear the repair cost.

I wonder if I had turned DSC off whether I would have had a little more control (or at least some engine power going to the wheels. As it was, I had none).

Thanks for reading,

jclarkv

Ouch :yikes:

Wagner 02-13-2010 08:42 AM

dang.

FSETH 02-13-2010 10:53 AM

Yikes! Probably not much you could have done if you were sliding on ice.

Naz24 02-13-2010 03:49 PM

wowww. how fast do you think you were going? looks like u got a huge chip out of that rim too!

jclarkv 02-13-2010 04:10 PM

I don't think it was more than 10 mph. But 2.5 tons of car impacting on that one edge of the wheel really focused the energy.

Ouch, if it's just the control arm it shouldn't be too bad. But damn that hurts.

This is my estimate

Ball joint 33326770985 $62.50

INTEGRAL LINK 33326774476 $25.03

RIGHT SWING PART 33326770952 $485.10

Guiding suspens. link w rubber mount rgh 33326779388 $245.84

Wishbone, left 33326770969 $330.86

Angular-contact ball bearing unit 33416770974 $115.07

Light alloy rim 36116770200 $443.95

TOTAL $1,708.35

And I'm sure you can source most of these parts quite a bit cheaper. The main Swing Part is only $485 and a rim if you didn't want to replace the other parts that are very likely damaged...

I am with you on this one. Probably going to need more parts than people think. Especially seeing as the OP drove on the wheel after it happened. Who knows what is bent? Shock, brake rotor, hub, axle, etc.

Donuts in the snow?

Don't forget labor for all that. Another $1K?.

Am I the only one who read this sentence?! Why in the hell would you move it an inch like this, let alone wait till the computer intervened?

I decided not to get started on this one.... I was waiting for someone to say something about that =)

Leave it for me to say what others will only think :)

jclarkv 02-16-2010 09:26 PM

Short distance was very, very short.

It wasn't apparent to me that there was any damage from inside the car and I didn't get out to look at it until I pulled it into a parking spot. And when I said 'a short distance' I meant 10 feet, to a parking space.

jclarkv 02-16-2010 09:32 PM

Wow. Big difference from the ballpark I got.

That's a much lower estimate than I got form the dealer (~$8k). This should be interesting. Thanks for taking the time to put that together.

:(Sorry, bad things happen....

I hope your insurance will cover repair cost.

I wouldn't have moved an inch, but I guess that's not bad. I was just thinking about how I've read threads where people drove like 2-3 miles w/ the engine overheating, or guys w/ their transmission making grinding noises and still driving it for another couple of weeks w/ the radio turned up to drown out the noise.

That sucks it happened though. Hopefully it's not too huge of a repair bill.

Did you see his previous post? Looks like the dealer said around $8k. :wow:

m5james 02-17-2010 07:43 PM

WOW...missed that one. Isn't it just one arm that is broken? What all are they wanting to replace anyways? I hope insurance will cover this.

Keetybwoy 02-19-2010 05:20 PM

Ouch!!!!!

On the up side it does look cool. If you managed to do it to the others it would look like it's been slammed! Forgive the pun.

Yes, how fast were you going?

Best of luck with the repairs matey.

Keith.
