tire speed rating void if you get a puncture?
 

Read this is many places when researching punctures and tire repairs, this makes sense but what are we looking at here? you get a nail in the tread and its repaired correctly or even incorrectly with just a tire plug for example, how careful should one drive if the speed rating has been trashed due to pucnture , for example my X5 has tires rated V both front and back max speed V - 149 mph240 km/h


And I have had a puncture and a repair, would driving at max 120km/h be a no no :dunno: or is my question like how long is a ball of string?I have never pushed the car further and have no need to, and tires are in very good condition no damage apart from the puncture....

I glanced at the topic on the net, but there are pages of threads full of opins, plus the "official line" from the tire mfg'ers...

I can only speak anecdotally: my previous set of V rated tires on our '01 X 3.0, had plug/patches in all four tires, over time. We drove that car on trips without ever thinking twice about it, albeit our speed never exceeded ~85 mph. Our current set of tires, Mich Diamaris (not my fave tire), have a plug/patch in one front tire and one in a rear; we drive that set on trips from NC to NJ typically twice per year and I don't give that a 2nd thought either.

I suppose if I was working, and had "Mom & 2 kids" in the car, I might chase new tires, but the very large tires on these cars, combined with the understated speed rating in terms of how fast people usually drive, gives me assurance that a good plug/patch jobs should outlast the tread of the tire(s).

All is just my 50Cts, but I would not bat an eye over your situ...

I would not worry about it unless you're doing extreme driving.

Normal driving is fine. I've had tires plugged, all only from the outside, and did not experience any problems.

Just don't try to break any speed records! :rofl:

My daily driver has plugs in all 4 tires, she's driven on the interstate to work 5 days a week. It's not suggested to travel at excessive speeds on punctured tires, but at highway speeds I have had zero issues (for the last 3 months).

:thumbup:thanks for everyone's input, much appreciated and to be frank my previous rear bridg.turanzas both had plugs only and both were just legal regarding tread level, and I pounded em , now those days are over :rolleyes: got a littleun and wife and am more responsible driving, speed limit on highways out here is 100km/h and you can get away with 110km before being stopped by police, again much appreciated that everyone has replied....@twins poppa after months of debate over what tire same size i could get away with on my 285/45 r19 10j and 255/50 r19 9j, i got rid of the staggered set-up and stuck on 255/55 r18 all round so at least can rotate wheels all round now....

NC is standard abbreviation for the state of North Carolina, where we spend much of our time during the year. Glad you settled on a tire size.

Nahhhh blame us Europeans for not being clued up, anyhow when I was state side for work with Jpmorgan not many people knew where cyprus was...only a dot of an island in the mediteranean, quite a few X5s out here though...
