Digital Tuner

Just upgraded my analogue tuner for a hybrid digital and was wondering from those of you with digital what to expect.
Analogue pic was fine until they switched the signal in april. Now digital in my area is great in the house but sweet fa on the car. Should I change anything else other than the tuner module? Is the aerial booster thingy different? Camping next weekend, gonna miss the German Grand Prix otherwise..AAAARGGHHHHHHHH:(

How?

How did you upgrade you analogue tuner to a digital one , and wouldn't it be hybrid and capable of both?

Yes it's a hybrid tuner but as most of the uk's analogue signal has been switched off now I couldn't tell you if it still works. Went camping in July south coast of England cracking picture, missus sat in the car and watched the Grand Prix. Had the tv in motion unlocked "thanks again Jas" and it worked most of the way home.
As for how I did it, I got a hybrid tuner from a facelift E53 from a breakers and simple as 1 out 1 in, hardest part was getting the modules out and back in to the plastic frame they sit in.

Is the blue plug on the hybrid tuner bigger than on the analogue and does it offer any other function on the digital tuner. I can't find anyone with a harness for the hybrid tuner. Would you know where to get one?

No need. Straight swap, plugs the same.

Sorry to ask you, could you take a picture of the back of the module and post it? Does the digital module still need antenna leads?

It looks exactly the same as what you've got and yes you do need antenna.

This is the analogue one with same size white and blue plug.

The Hybrid one below seems to be different and the blue plug is bigger, is this what your digital tuner looks like?

This is the only kind of digital tuner i find on ebay, if this is not what it looks like could you post a link of it.

OK, replying to a fairly old thread, but you have posted two different types of VM. The one in the small photo is the VM that is for ibus cars, the ones in the larger photo are for MOST bus cars (the ones with i-drive). They are NOT interchangeable.

The VM's are completely plug'n'play swappable, so long as you replace like for like. So an analogue ibus VM can be replaced directly by a Hybrid ibus VM - the plugs are identical and so are the dimensions. They don't need any coding, unless you want to enable TV-in-motion in which case you can do it by an adapter lead or by software.

I need to swap my Analogue tuner out for a digital one. Best sources and how much should I be looking to pay?

I really wouldn't bother mate the signal is so sketchy for what you'll pay you can get all sorts of other stuff/options. Too much money for no improvement. I got mine off fleabay.

I think you must have a problem as I have about 30 digital channels on mine at present. As more areas switchover the digital transmitter power will be steadily increased but it is not designed for vehicular use so there will always be some issues. Our area has just switched but I have not retuned either car yet.

As to finding a module then it really depends upon how much you want to spend. Just make sure it has the UK DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) spec. Some earlier modules have a limited channel capability in the same way as early Freeview boxes could only store a limited number of channels. Later ones can hold around 100, some a lot more.

JBF 04-29-2011 09:02 AM

Don't suppose there are any part numbers floating around?

X5Sport 05-01-2011 05:09 PM

Have you tried putting the last 7 characters of your VIN into Realoem to see what comes up? It's a good place to start if you're after OEM parts.

JBF 05-02-2011 04:15 PM

Umm of course I have. Not too easy to find amongst their categories. If only they thought of adding a search box.

X5Sport 05-04-2011 02:55 PM

Not an easy beast to find is it!! I have found only one reference to the Hybrid Video Module and that is a part of a Retrofit kit, which you don't want. However it just could be the last entry under Item 8 here:

RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0d NAVIGATION SYSTEM/VIDEO MODULE

Digital receivers were installed from Sept 2004 so this one should be a Hybrid, and it's the only one now in production. Probably around £900 new :yikes:
