BMW upgraded their iDrive systems in 2009 (CIC) which allows for DVDs to be played using the in-dash DVD system. Unfortunately, we are greeted with a "For your safety, video is only available when parked" message and and blank screen.

Permissions
You can select for this smartTV features to be enabled/disabled through a simple command via the blinker stalk in case the vehicle is driven by someone other than you.

Where do you load the DVD in the 2011 X5 since the Nav system has moved to hard disk now? Is there still a DVD slot?

Absolutely - smartTV only overrides the interlock and is completely transparent.
