X5M performance and handling mods?

Would like to hear from those that have done mods to their X5M. I am most interested in anything that improves 0-60 ET but I would also like to learn what you have done to improve handling and how you chose to lower the vehicle.

In January, I will start looking for a 2015-17 X5M.

I might end up buying a new one and pick it up at the plant. I think that would limit me to Dinan to keep the factory warranty so hearing from anyone that has gone the Dinan route would be great. If I buy used it will be one with less then 30,000 miles.

I would like to hear about HP/TQ gains and how far I can go before I have to worry about something breaking every time I launch it though I have not problem going to the iffy point.

Any input?

Sorry, posted some stuff for E70. My mistake.

bcredliner 12-24-2016 10:29 AM

Does everyone on this forum leave their X5M stock? No one can offer any suggestions?

JWMich 12-25-2016 07:57 PM

I don't get the impression much is happening with the F85 package yet. The forum at Xbimmers.com for that platform has some activity, and Burger Motorsports has some things going on that get some discussion at N54tech.com.

Good luck with your search.

Thanks for responding.

bcredliner:

I have a 2016 BMW X5M that I picked up at the BMW Performance Delivery Center in Greenville, SC this past June.

I am leasing my X5M for 3 years. According to my friends at BMW USA in Montville, NJ, most X5M's and X6M's in the northeast USA are leased and not purchased new. That may explain why many of the original "owners" are hesitant, reluctant or just plain against paying for any performance modifications that could invalidate their lease agreement, let alone spending money that they will not recoup at the end of their lease. A strong incentive to keep our vehicles essentially stock.

It is my experience that it is the group of 2nd Owner's who purchase these type of performance vehicles that are coming off of a lease who then will spend the money on various performance modifications and improvments, including coding, chips, exhausts, suspension, etc.

Thanks for the input. I have done an owner's choice lease in the past and may be the route I go with X5M. Going to dealer tomorrow to pick up some parts and get some input there. Happy New Year!

I'm interested in getting Burger's JB4 w/boost control for my '11 x5m with upgraded Turbos and catless downpipes. Explain please, why Burger is shady. I've already made the mistake of buying from Omar @Velos...

I've got an '11 x5m with pureturbos, velos downpipes, supposedly a Velos tune(-that sucks), V1, H&R lowering springs w/EDC, 22" Vossens, tint, gloss black front grills, painted to match reflectors (ft & rr), Carbon side markers and I'm probably missing a few things...

And why is that? I have lots of their stuff on both my X5 and my 335 N54. They've been more than wonderful for years now. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a BMW tuner who's working harder to unlock these cars SAFELY. They're not like a Cobb who's tuning dozens of cars...

That's what I thought too... After spending $3,415 and ~$2,250 of that for my "Custom Dyno Tune" the remaining for catless DPs, last August 2016... The most I've received to date is a self admitted "Base(modest) M5 PureTurbo Tune". I have called repeatedly, emailed to the point Omar says he won't email and to call. ALL without any real support or even having one called returned... I've setup 2 private 'dyno days' to the tune(pun intended) of $550 additional without the help of Velos or Omar. Last month I finally asked for a refund several times and never receive a satisfactory response to this date. Every time I call I get varying responses ALL end with me not getting to, talk to Omar. "He's out to lunch", "he's on a plane"x2, "he's not here", etc... Each time asking for him to call me back, leaving my name and number. Which if my memory serves me, he's never called me back once. I won't even get into how bad the emails are... Yeah, I guess now I see how safe they are. So safe, they just refuse to tune my truck. I have track slips and dyno sheets to prove my claims. After spending $~8k, I've gained 60wtq and 100whp. It's pathetic... I would have been better off going stage 2 Velos, but question if my experience would have been any better.

Thus far, it sounds like Dinan is the best value (HP/TQ gain per dollar spent). I will know what the results will be and it is all matched for other components. As I have done with my 4.6 I would add Meth injection system and a shot of nitrous. What's the flaw in that thinking?

You said, "Dinan". That's the flaw. My setup has nothing to do with Dinan and I would only buy Dinan components if it was the very last resort. Put as nicely as possible... Dinan is on the far left end of the spectrum. My build is far right. Dinan is fine for those who want to send a lot with minimal results and factory warranty. I willing to spend, but I actually want real high results. Not for the faint at heart... If you think Dinan in the best value (hp/tq) then I wish you the best with them, but encourage you to do more research. Each their own... After being around BMWs for nearly 20 years. I've seen the good and bad of Dinan. Dinan is not for me.

My 4.6 was Dinanized in 2002. In 2012 I added meth injection and 150 shot of nitrous. I didn't change the tune since most of my driving is without nitrous. I have had no problem.

Realizing Dinan is usually somewhat conservative, unless input and research uncovers another route where I can have over 800+HP all the time I am guessing I can go the same route as I did with my 4.6., have the Dinan tune with meth and the Nitrous add-on if needed. I think an X5M would be a good candidate for two stage system.

I have no intention of being conservative. I like to get someplace different and where most think I am an idiot for going there.

BoostedX5M 03-16-2017 03:51 PM

We share that in common. I must have misread your initial post, assuming you were another blanket Dinan fan. I see I was incorrect.

I'm currently interested in getting my stage 3 running right with catless DPs and stage 1 Turbo upgrade.

NOS would be down the line for me, if I went that route in addition.

My driving use would be similar to yours with the addition of a couple track days.

You mentioned a check valve you added to the meth line near the intake to avoid drip, can you explain in better detail and include the part you used?

TIA

Depending how the meth injection is installed it should not be necessary though it doesn't hurt to make sure you are getting meth when you aren't asking for it. What controller are you using? Snow Performance | The Water-Methanol Injection Experts

Similar to the kit I have with the exception that I have the controller to set spray by boost or pulse width. Looking seriously at X5Ms----again.

Dang, I wish I would've seen this thread when Originally posted back in 2016....LOL...so any Updates to report in November of 2019?

bcredliner 11-21-2019 01:10 PM

I purchased a red with beige interior 2013 X5M for my wife in June of last year. She does not want me to do anything that could impact reliability. However, I sold her on performance software based on greater economy and smoother acceleration when driving normally so she was fine with the extra performance. It does accelerate smoother and it did increase the mileage about 2mpg and did increase the performance. Software specs are 77HP and 85 torque gains. I purchased the software from Turner Motorsports. I kept my X5 4.6 and am still doing mods. I have made some improvements to nitrous system and in early December I will be installing lower ratio diffs.

That’s a great gain!

Let us know how the diff swap goes.

Awesome! so since you guys settled on an E70 then there are LOTS of upgrades to choose from when she is ready.
