X5M versus X6M
 

I'm assuming they are both going to get the same engine with the same specs. By how much will the X6M outperform the X5M?

Since the X6 is heavier (according to one BMW website), and since the X6 is reported to have a higher coefficient of drag (assuming the same frontal area), then if they had the same engine the X6 wouldn't outperform the X5 at all, it wouldn't keep up. Depending on the suspension differences it may handle better (or worse). It is all theoretical at this point, since the published figures for weight and drag are for the X5 4.8i

It will be similar to M5 vs M6 comparo. BMW maintains that X6 will always be faster as its was designed from start to have an ///M version.

That would make good sense, but according to BMW the M6 weighs less than the M5, so the slight performance difference is to be expected. Do you think they will add ballast to the X5M to protect the X6M reputation, or will they detune it?

On the other hand, maybe BMW marketing haven't heard that the BMW engineers missed the weight target on the X6.

JCL, I'm look at the BMW website right now and here are the weight numbers.

X6 35i 4894lbs
x6 50i 5269lbs

x5 30i 4982lbs
x5 48i 5335lbs

Are these the numbers you are looking at?

From the Autobild article the X6m is rumored to run a (nurburing?) lap time on par with the M3 E46. From test driving both the X5 and X6, the X6 hands downs handles better than the X5. I believe with the same engine, the X6M would be faster than the X5M on track. The question is by how much? I agree with LeMans, that it would be similar to the M5 and M6 comparison, but the X6 has a better handling technology so I'm assuming by a larger margin.

No, I am not in the US. I use BMW CA's numbers, in kg.

As I said in my earlier post, it is all theoretical at this point. The weights are different due to the different options each marketing organization puts into the build. Essentially, the X6 isn't any lighter than the X5, so the performance will be the same.

With the M6, BMW had to use carbon and other items to reduce the weight. Maybe they will do the same with the X6. They could make it a two-seater for example :rofl:

All joking aside, we really don't know at this time. And I do think that the suspension from the X6 will make it into the X5 in similar versions.

I was just at the M Performance Driving School in Greer. All I can say, after having seen the X5M doing some high speed runs, is DAMN!

Very, very nice. I was talking to the instructors, who also train the drivers testing the E70M version, and their feedback from their pupils has been that the car shifts and handles extraordinarily well. They have been told, as it has been posted here and elsewhere, that is in not the M-DCT but a "new" transmission that is very fast in shifts.

So, take it for what it is worth. This all occured at Greer two days ago. I am definitely looking forward to this vehicle.

The told us during our initial session that if we were seen using cameras, that they would confiscate them. I was, after all, on their property... :)

Sounds like my M5 though....Actually, maybe a little better.

The M-DCT in current M3 cannot handle the torque of X6 ///M, therefore the new version.


JCL, M-division is reducing weight of X6 by using lightweight body parts in several areas.
