X6M over X5M
Had a crazy thought yesterday.. Maybe I should get the X6M instead of the X5M.
Lets be honest, it's a better looking vehicle. Wheels are better and I understand it handles better also. I don't have kids but am worried about giving up that 5th seat.. Am I crazy for even thinking about asking my salesman if he could switch my order? Please, talk me out of it... |
A sale is a sale...he shouldn't mind...they can always find a buyer for your slot.
However, while the handing might be a smudge better, the utility of the X5M to me is worth only 97% of the handling of the X6M. Your first answer/thought/gut feeling is typically the right one....stay with the X5M! Good Luck and can't wait to see pics and mods?? |
Get the X6M. It's fookin hot!
I sat in one Saturday. I'm glad it was pouring out or I would have taken it for a spin. I say go for it B. :) Take it for a drive. How often will you need 5 seats? |
I drove and also sat in the back seat of an X6M a few days ago. In terms of 5 vs. 6, don't get the 6 if you plan to have any six-footers sit in the back seat for any period of time -- the back seat head room in the X6 is not designed for six-footers.

That would be a funny selection when it comes time to carpool for your buddies... "So Bill, how tall are you...6'2"? oops, sorry, you will have to ride in the minivan today." |

You really think the X6 is a better looking vehicle?? It's one of those things you either really like or really hate, and I have to say the latter! It's a crossover! Not a car, not a van, not a wagon, not an SUV...just something undecided in-between. Every now and then, manufacturers create a fad and while it may be hot when it comes out, nobody could care less about it in a couple of years. It belongs in the same category as the Infiniti FX. If you don't need the cargo space and you don't have kids, then why get somethng that looks like a big beefed up car that's jacked up! Get an M5 instead. Otherwise stick with something that's going to be a classic SUV/SAV and one that will smoke the pants of any other...including the Porshe Potato Turbo And while you're at it, get custom plates that say PRSHETR! |
I say the the X5. Maybe they'll have an M version of the Gran Tourismo which is pretty close looking to the X6 but I think going to be even sportier since it will be lower to the ground.
|
While I think the X6 has some good lines (more from the rear), I don't think it's better looking than the X5, but if that's what you think, that's all that matters. I know people say that but I believe it... there are people out there who think SUVs are monstrosities... they see you for a half second while you stare at it for years.
As for practicality, if you have any doubt whatsoever about only seating 4, then you need to get the 5-seater because this is a big commitment. Well it would be for me anyway, I buy and keep a while. |
You won't go wrong with either the X5 or X6.
If you don't need the extra utility, go for the X6. It was actually my first choice, but then I have kids and a wife that just doesn't like the look of the X6. I personally think it's a great looking vehicle and describes me pretty well. |
Look at it this way...you can't go wrong with either

"it's a better looking vehicle" slap yourself
|
Let me be clear.. It's not that I don't think the X5M is great looking, it is. It's just pedestrian. The aggressive lines that the e53 had are gone and even the new wheels scream "soccer mom"..
If it weren't for what was under the hood and it's handling capabilities, and the fact that it's the most badass SUV on the planet, I probably wouldn't get it for looks alone. Check that, the looks of the X5M is the biggest thing it has going against it. I like the looks but it certainly is not the best looking car BMW has ever made. It's not even the best looking SUV BMW has ever made. The X6M on the other hand.. While I have mixed feelings about it's looks on paper, every time I see one drive by I'm a little awe struck.. I'm like, "wow, that's a pretty sharp looking vehicle.." So while it doesn't do much for me in theory, it does do a lot for me in practice. But then there is the question asked by L, "How often do I need 5 seats?" The answer is, not all that often.. But when I do need 5 seats, I do need 5 seats. And I don't want to be a back seat passenger in somebody else's car because I didn't have enough room in my vehicle to accommodate the bigger party. And that's what happens when you give up a seat, you start being a passenger in other people's cars and I'd rather be the driver. Also, cargo room? I thought they were about the same size? No? |

Keep in mind though: if you prefer the X6 body, the new X6 50i TT gives you a 440-hp option, and you can get it right now (today) for a cool $10-$15K less than the X6///M. The performance hit in "downgrading" is not as bad as it is for X5///M "droolers" (like myself). You're still in a screaming-fast machine with a X6 50i TT. With the X5 non-M, you're stepping down by 200 hp, and almost 2 seconds on the 0-to-60 mph department. |
Hey B-Line, I share your thoughts! Coming from the E70 I was really thrilled to hear about the M-version - but when the X6 appeared, I was completely smitten by it. Yes, only 4 seats/cargo area smaller/slightly lower - but it is a fresh twist on a very popular design. I ordered a X5M but changed to the X6M - looking forward to a "fresh face" - the X5 is starting to age IMO.
Carbon black/grey/piano black.....oh boy......... Cheers, |

And X6 has less cargo room... And the 5th seat... Dont forget the "utility" factor. Last thing... once you get X5M at your door, you will forget about this "decision"... ;) |
X6M is nice looking, but Meiac can't ride in the back seat. And Meiac isn't that tall...
An X6 is more 2 + 2 kids seating anyhow, not due to legroom, but that the rear passengers will be hunched over. X5 also has the big moonroof which is a huge ++ imo. |

B-Line,
While I am not in mkt for either, (or any new car), I'm with you: for what I suspect you use it/need it for, I vote for the X6M! GL,mD |
B, the X6 flatout looks more aggressive. You've had a X5 before.....take a trip on the new side. If I bite, it will definitely be the X6///M. After owning (2) E53's....I used the backseats a maximum of 10 times total. For me, it would be a no brainer. For you, you gotta take your passenger count into account. My vote X6///M.........Phil

yeh I've gone with the X6M, I don't need as many seats and I'm up for a bit of a change in shape. One thing I will miss though when I hand over the X5 is the massive sunroof, geez it's nice

If you really want something out of ordinary just go with X6M,if that extra seat in the back is that important than go with X5M -can't go wrong with either one.I will go with X6M ,I saw one today and I love it!Good luck!
|
Another good reason for the X6 - a few weeks ago we had visitors - there was a total of 5 of us, and the other four wanted to go see the museum of science and history, while I would rather run headfirst into a wall - but guess what - the X6 could only seat four so I had a perfectly valid excuse to stay home ;)
In all seriousness though - the X6 is great - but like its been stated it is really just a 2+2 and if you ever need to seat 5 it will make you look like a pompus ass (which personally I dont mind). |
