Launch control

So anyone know anything about launch control yet? Ever had a car with launch control? Is it only for Automatic cars or SMG variants as well?

Or is launch control, good ole fashioned, Hold the brake, depress the accelerator, load up the turbo's and release?

Or is there more to it?

rh71 09-02-2009 03:48 PM

many youtube videos for BMW launch control. ;)

B-Line 09-02-2009 04:35 PM

Just checked out a few.. They all seem to be related to the SMG trans..
Do the new XM vehicles have launch control? They are automatic transmissions.

Launch Control? - Video

Agent Palbay posted these videos last year...video 1 looks like the driver was testing out launch control... ...

Silver X5 ///M-2008

I'm laughing at the bell soundtrack in clip 1...gives the impression that there's a new sheriff in town

There are different launch controls for different cars. I mean the M5 LC differs from the new E class AMG. I only used LC on the M5 about 5times. Its a really cool feeling but takes some time to set up. I mean, if you reach a red light and want to race a guy that just pulled up, before you turn off dcs, change shifts to s6, push the m button, etc, the lights would have turned green and the guy would been long gone;-)

HIRISC 10-01-2009 11:01 AM

^^ I agree. I read somewhere that the informal testing of launch control yielded just 1/10th of a second improvement to 60mph over standard brake/gas/sport mode.

If that is true, there isn't really a valid case for LC

I have a GTech that I'll try out after break in to validate that.

Car and Driver's test yielded the following -

0-60 - 4.3
0-60 w/Launch - 4.1

I have launch control on the M3 - it is fun, but not something you would choose to use with any regularity, I would think. In the M3, one can lauch at different rpm - once in launch mode, you can alter the revs to which the car goes up to - from 4500 to 6500, I believe, in 500rpm increments. Not sure if the ///X Ms have this feature??
I think I've used it once only. It's way more fun driving on the track :)

A 4.1 second 0-60 in a 5000lb+ vehicle has GOT to be an eye opener

Launch control

What are the instructions?

(I can only find instructions for the SMG trans.. Not the auto.)

X5-M power 11-16-2009 10:04 PM

Try this, and hope it's work :)

((From automotiveaddicts.com))

Quote:

To activate Launch Control, the driver stops the vehicle, moves the gear selector into the M/S position and activates the Sports Power mode, as well as the M Dynamic mode, or respectively, the DSC-Off mode. Then, with the transmission in stage M1, the driver presses down the brake pedal and moves the accelerator to at least 60% throttle, setting Launch Control to standby. Standby status is confirmed by “starter’s flag” symbol in the instrument cluster. As soon as the driver releases the brake pedal, the vehicle will accelerate with full power in “genuine racing style.” In the process, the M Sports Automatic transmission automatically upshifts at the ideal points, with the fastest possible shifts and optimum wheelspin control. The driver may terminate the Launch Control process at any time by reducing the throttle position.

HIRISC 11-16-2009 11:43 PM

yep, that's about it.. manual mode, paddle shift to 1st vs 1Sport, brake on, gas to the floor - wait for the starter flag, sidestep the brake, keep gas to floor, hang on :)

mswaz 11-17-2009 01:28 AM

B-line;
There are detailed instructions to activate Launch control in the M suppliment to the owners guide. I had read someplace a while ago that this programming had to be activated by the dealer but not sure how factual that is.

LeMansX5 11-17-2009 08:40 AM

B-Line, you asked the same back in September in this thread. http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...h-control.html

Sorry, I did too many drugs in the 90's and my memory isn't what it used to be.

The good news is, I can see through time.

From page 18 & 19 of Supplemental manual:

Thank you

HIRISC 02-19-2010 10:32 PM

If your 'M' mode is setup properly (steps 3+4 above), you can:

Press M button
Shift to M/S
Paddle shift to 1
Press and hold brake
Press gas to floor
Wait for flag in center console
Release brake
Keep your foot all the way to the floor and the X will shift for you at redline

JDM996CAB 02-19-2010 10:35 PM

again thank you; i guess i should wait until 1500 miles to try it.

HIRISC 02-19-2010 10:37 PM

^^ so they say ;)

LeMansX5 02-19-2010 10:45 PM

Did anyone notice that manual says "Do not use launch control when towing a trailer". Imagine that.

So who has put the hitch on X ///M? ;)

LeMansX5 02-19-2010 10:48 PM

Merged the threads....so everything is at one place.

///MB 02-20-2010 01:47 AM

Thanks for the info. I was wondering why I couldn't keep doing launch control back to back. Always had to wait a few minutes or so before it would work again. I knew I should have read the manual!

jimsaq 02-20-2010 08:29 AM

I notice it doesn't say anything about towing a caravan, which is great news for all us caravan drag'rs!
