Just got my X5m

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum, but I have been reading it for some time. I think i got more good info from here than BMW, my salesperson or any other site....great job guys!. Anyway I just took delivery of my X5m last night and so far all I can say is HOLY CRAP!...I thought my E53 4.6is was zippy, this is just a whole new world. I have not really pressed it yet .... wont do that till the break-in period is over. Question for you guys, does anybody know if the style 99 wheels will fit as snows... I have a set of em from my 4.6 and live in Denver where the sport tires really don't do it in the winter.

Cheers

rbaror 10-08-2009 05:21 PM

I will try to post pics this weekend...its raining / almost snowing here and its already dirty :(

King 10-08-2009 05:24 PM

Congrats and yes we need to see some pics!! E53 wheels will not fit on the E70. Different hub bore sizes!

rbaror 10-08-2009 05:29 PM

Thanks for the info King, I guess I will have to pony up yet another few K for snow wheels / tires...geez my pocket is gonna really hurt after all this! I think the check I wrote yesterday was the biggest single check I have ever written!

SandmanTR 10-08-2009 05:32 PM

Congrats and welcome!!! Wait till after the break in period when you can open it up.

pastorj 10-08-2009 05:37 PM

sandman, how is your x6m as a daily driver?

EliasMunz 10-08-2009 05:43 PM

Awesome I envy you.. What color is your x5m and what interior color did you order it?

rbaror 10-08-2009 05:46 PM

Elias, I got spacegrey with black perf comfort seats and the carbon leather trim. The interior is very dark, but looks incredible.

chilliwilli 10-08-2009 05:59 PM

No need to spend extra $$ I have seen several E70's with E53 wheels so it can be done...just not aware of how. Ask your dealer.

And congrats, welcome aboard...looking forward to pics and driving impressions

Oh yea. 1300 miles and having a ton of fun. Man this thing freaking moves. Still can't believe it. How close are you?

rh71 10-08-2009 07:53 PM

space gray X5M, gotta see it.

Ok so here are a few admittedly poor pictures. Its snowing / raining here and the car is dirty and its quite dark in my garage. Hopefully it will be nice this weekend and I can get it washed and take proper photos.

chubyball 10-08-2009 08:42 PM

Do they come with Brembo Rotor and Brake?

SandmanTR 10-08-2009 08:48 PM

Great color!

Not very - about 375 miles.

I've been a little bad after 250, but I'm behaving again until at least 1000.

Have you done any 0-60 runs with our without launch control?

talon98 10-08-2009 09:18 PM

finally i see the space gray, thanks!!...

definitely validates my choice...
only thing i did different was go for the black leather non-perf seats and the aluminum trim...i have to wait until december...oh and as far as opening it up, thats what i used the dealer's for..:)

Not yet. In the Big Apple this week but plan to play with her this weekend with and without lanch control.

Congrats, SG looks awesome. I am thinking now SS or SG?!?! I am status 112 so decisions decisions

rbaror 10-08-2009 10:01 PM

talon,
I did not have the luxury of trying out a dealer's car....In fact I think mine may be one of the first to arrive in Colorado ... I even specifically asked my SA not to let anyone drive it cause I knew the temptation to floor it is too great (and I wanted to be the first to drive it). So far (~24 hours) I have noticed that the gas mileage is pretty bad (I did not expect a prius)... I have done ~100 miles and burned through about 1/2 tank without going nuts on the accelerator. I assume gas mileage will improve as it breaks in.

Another question for you knowledgeable crew... does anyone know if the extended service is available for the x5m? I asked my SA and he is checking, but has not gotten a response yet from BMW.

Oh and thanks for all the well wishes from everyone!

I am not yet 100% sure about X5 ///M hub size being same as regular X5. Someone mentioned to me that it can take X6 wheels. Not confirmed from my sources.

Just like we had E53 winter wheels as style 99 (although not many us used style 99) BMW has winter wheels for X5 M as well. Coming to your showroom soon. Pics below:

My gas mileage is up to 11.7 mixed - and I'm playing just under the 5K range. If I see 13/14 I'll be happy. I think you assumption will prove correct.

My salesperson actually laughed out loud when I asked about extended service and/or warranty. She didn't have numbers but speculated that extended service could be $6K and at least that for the extended (to 100K) warranty.

I'll ask for some less humorous numbers.

Enjoy it. :beerchug:

I'm putting 20" Pirelli Scorpion's on come Dec 1. I thought briefly about trying the truck as-is in the snow, but the runflats on this do not appear to be cold-OK like the stock 4.4i tires were.

Oh well.

Oh well.

Dec 1? Isn't that late for MiniSNOWtah? Performance rubber is not good below 40F.
RFT will be skis on snow. :)

rbaror 10-08-2009 10:27 PM

Well on my 4.6is with the stock wheels and stock Michelin Diamaris, the car could best be described as a well polished hockey puck on ice and snow .... I assume the same on the X5m plus this one is even more overpowered. We do get slick days here in Denver and this is now going to be my daily driver. I don't love the idea of changing tires with the seasons ... it seems like it would ruin the tires to continually take em on and off the wheels ... so I am either leaning to dedicated snow wheels / tires or something to fit the 20's that's good all around (but I kinda doubt those really exist).

Depends.. most seasons we don't have snow that sticks until after Dec 1.

That said, we've had a blizzard on Halloween that dumped about 13" of the white stuff.

In either event, you're right about the RFlats. I'll call my tire guy tomorrow :)

I feel your pain.

I did the snow tire dance with my previous 4.4.. This is no 4.4 and LeMan's is right about the RFlats.. I've nearly spun my Z06 a couple of time during late season jaunts in the cool weather :wow:

I guess maybe one way to dodge the absurd BMW wheel pricing is to buy aftermarket and put the snows on those. I just haven't seen any available :(

:iagree: I am told that it impacts the integrity of tire if you swap them more than twice.

I believe there 2 brands who have 20" all season tires, but I will not use them as I prefer winter tires.

King 10-08-2009 11:46 PM

You can now get Pirelli Scorpion winter tires in the 20" OEM sizes! I thought about it but with the amount of snow/ice we get here, 315's in the rear can't be a good thing no matter how good of a winter tire. That's just too wide of a tire. I'm putting on my 19's next week. We already got our first taste of winter today with flurries! Getting my wheels powder coated black as we speak. ;)

HIRISC 10-08-2009 11:53 PM

Great, another set of wheels in the garage ;)

Anyone have links to aftermarket 19" or preferably 20" X5M fitment-correct wheels (that are not chrome)?

Nice, I'm glad it has them. Have you sat in both the regular and the comfort seats? Differences?

rbaror 10-09-2009 01:12 AM

I have not sat in the "regular" seats. I have the sport seats in my 4.6is and like them just fine, but thought the comfort seats in other BMW's I've driven were better so I figured i might as well get em...plus i really like the ventilated bit even though its not that big of an effect....still nice on a hot day. From what I can tell the biggest difference is that bit that articulates mid back and the adjustable side bolsters.

about the full leather...yes its very nice, but prolly not worth the extra $$$ and there was no way to get the comfort perf seats without it

mswaz 10-09-2009 01:27 AM

I saw a poster in my dealer detailing 2010 costs for extended maintenance. X5/X6M was listed at around $3500 I do not remember what the exact amount was. It was a BMWNA sign not a dealer sign so the rates are published someplace.

Love the Space gray very nice. i am trying to decide between Space gray and Silver Stone. Leaning towards the SilverStone being an M exclusive color but not sure how the blue tinge in the paint will satisfy me in the long run...

Hans_ACS 10-09-2009 02:02 AM

Congrats on the car, great color too, first time I see it.

I ordered mine with the full leather/perf seats but in silverstone. I like the contrast the lighter leather brings to the interior. I think a car of this level and price should definitely have the full leather and at that price I'm disappointed the full leather option doesn't include the alcantara headliner like the m5/m6.

I drove an X6 with the ventilated seats and they cooled the seats down really well. =)

HIRISC 10-09-2009 08:12 AM

The bummer is that there is no comfort seat only option. I'd have sprung for those, but have no need for ventilated seats in my region.

The full leather looks nice. It would be great if they offered a deviated stitching option to better differentiate it from the non-full. Oh well, still looks great.

The silverstone interior is great looking. ///MB what color exterior?

Not Brembo specifically:

M Brakes and tires to match the M Power.
Outstanding stopping power with fade reduced to a minimum is guaranteed by the high-performance M brake system, which combines giant four-piston fixed calipers at the front with floating calipers at the rear, combined in each case with large, internally-vented lightweight brake discs. The brake rotors themselves measure 15.6” in diameter at front and 15.2” at rear. They feature a riveted connection to join the aluminum rotor hats with the cast-iron rotor discs.

I originally wanted blue then decided I would probably get tired of the color. I would love silver but don't like silverstone. It looks too baby blue/light blue under most lighting. So, I'm going with white.

Well that's no fun bro...I say put all that BMW computer code to the test and let the Dynamic Performance Control, M-tuned X-Drive, FlexRay, (and whatever else the engineers packed) fight it out to stabilize your X as it slips and slides its' way on those 20" summer treads. Would LOVE to see what kinds of messages the dash and i-Drive displays send your way, as all those fancy electronic gizmos struggle mightily to overcome basic Newtonian physics!

But in all seriousness, I believe Michelin makes their Latitude Tour HP all-seasons in a 20" staggered version.

I have also driven the 4.6is on the snow and yes it can get pretty scary. Accelerating really isn't the problem and turning is ok too as long as you're going slow. But, trying to stop if you are on even the slightest downgrade is almost impossible. One time I was driving maybe 10-15 mph and came up on a crosswalk. I hit my brakes and the car just wouldn't stop. So we waiving at the people not to cross. It was pretty scary but also kinda funny. It reminded me of the scene from Austin Powers when he's driving the steam roller and waiving at the security guard to get out of his way even though he's only moving at about 1mph.

In any case, I'll most likely be taking my X5M, after I get it, up to Mammoth at some point. I'll have to test it out and see how much better it performs. :-)

i can agree with taking turns a bit to fast in snow (seeing as you from LA) driving in Running Springs can be a trip these days. 6 inchs and i nearly spun out making a simple right turn.... only had 2 chains on (stupid idea)

had one time in Green Valley, i went a bit off the main road and ended up on a non plowed steep... and i mean steep downhill road with no chains and bare tires... Hill Desent saved me. counting the brakes were to the floor, i didnt stop.

I just hope the M can do better. ( i dont see anyone going full out like the test mules :) )

So my SA told me that BMW is recommending style 298m wheels for a winter setup... does anyone have good pics of them...he sent over a scanned doc that does not show them very well.

HIRISC 10-12-2009 02:22 PM

Is the hub diameter the same for the std E70 and the X5///M?

Also, what diameter are those rims he's suggesting? I don't know for sure, but based on the size of the brake caliper, it doesn't look like 18" or maybe even 19" diameter wheels will clear the brakes.

:dunno:

FWIW, I just ordered snows - std. sizes.

rbaror 10-12-2009 03:38 PM

these are 19's. My SA said that the hub is the same as other e70's. I don't love the look though, so i decided to just put snows on the stock wheels and went with the pirelli scorpions (just ordered them 5 mins ago).

Nice guys !!! I can only hope you get tired of them quickly so I can buy a pre-owned X5M some day soon.

rbaror 10-19-2009 11:11 PM

Just an FYI, I put the pirelli scorpions on my x5m on the stock rims today... and of course the shop managed to scratch each of my rims (a couple of spots on the very edges where they scratched off the clearcoat). I have yet to raise the proper hell.:tantrum:

The ride seems a smidge softer and handling seems fine (have not gone fast or taken any hard turns yet).

I hope it does ok when the snow comes. In the past I changed the wheels and tires to a dedicated snow setup and since the scratching incident, I am kinda regretting not doing that again.

Cheers

The scratch-stuff is a bummer.. A good tire shop is hard to find.

I'd have done a dedicated snow setup too, but the only option I could determine was a $6K set of ///M wheels + tires and then you're still looking at 20" x 275 width minimum.

I'll hope you/we have good luck on the full size Scorpions.
