Trade in the 08 4.8 for an X5 M?
Hey All,
555 is calling out to me and I am having a hard time resisting. 23 months left on my lease and it'll cost me about 12k to get of it. Is the M really that much better than my 4.8 as a daily and winter car? I've driven it and really like it, but down low I can't really tell much of a difference. I'm not even convinced that it looks better than my 4.8 w/ H&Rs, aero kit, 215s, and Eisenmann exhaust. But I've always been an M guy and you can't ague with 555/500. Help me out here guys! Thanks! _Tom http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/DSC_0351.jpg http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q...n/DSC_0264.jpg |
Don't do it. I was in the market for 4.8 and somehow managed to justify the upgrade. Would not have gotten rid of a beautiful 4.8 like yours and eat up the loss for the M, as nice as it is.
|
i thought you had a m3 already, no? if you do, i wouldn't do it. the 4.8 is perfect in the snow, and honestly, i think it looks just as good as the x5 M. you don't need 2 fast cars.
|
Think it this way; How many times will you use that extra HP?
|
I'm in the same boat as you, resisting everyday since test drove the X5 M 3 weeks ago. Man it is hard, don't go to the dark side....
|
Wait till your current lease is up and get a 2012. Do you really want to be upside down $12K just to be the first on your block to have one?
|
As I've written elsewhere, I would not have prematurely upgraded from an E70 4.8, (especially one that is as nicely done as yours).
My 4.4 lease was over and it was an easy call for me to upgrade from the 4.8 to the ///M. Don't get me wrong, the ///M is an improvement pretty much across the board - mostly performance and electronics, but you're already driving one of the best SUV's on the market. If I were you, I'd bank the $12K & enjoy your ride for a couple of more years. BTW, I don't think you can ever have too many fast cars ;) |

And as far as looks...imo, there's absolutely no comparison. ///M FTW! |

I think it depends on how bad you want the X5M and if you are willing to pay it. I decided to keep my 09 X5 4.8 and get the X5M as well. |
I am paying 60k above a 4.8 for my M.
It comes down to this. If you can comfortably afford it, then just do it. Live is too short to be wondering and it's only money. |

We were in a perfect position, too. We owned an '02 4.6is, and a friend of a friend was Jonesing to buy it from us, so we sold it this past spring - we figured we wouldn't use it during the summer, as my wife just drives the convertible. That said, I don't think I'd want to swallow a 12K pill just to upgrade. The X5M will still be available in a couple years - I'd bank the dough, and enjoy your (beautiful) X5 for now. Just my two cents. |

Unless $ is of no consequence, a $12G hit is pretty steep, imo. |
Look, there is no right answer to this. If you're Donald Trump (are you?) and have $$cash$$ to burn, then why the hell not?? GO for it!
On the other hand....Looking at your X....if it was me personally, there is NO way in hell I would drop my lease on a virtually new 2008 4.8i just to jump on the latest and greatest model. Your X5 looks SWEET and you've got what..15,000 miles on it? 20,000 tops? It's basically still new. And it will still out-gun 95% of all the SUVs on the road. Outside of the sporadic Cayenne Turbo or GTS variants, or the Infiniti FX50, you are still King of the road. Another way to look at it: there will always be something faster and better that comes out RIGHT after you buy something. Same thing with computers. One year goes by, and you no longer have the fastest, best machine money can buy. You may not go broke if you keep substituting your PC/Mac every year. But you sure as hell will rack up serious debt if you keep swapping your vehicle every time a better one comes out. If that was my 4.8i, I would ride out the lease and bide my time. |
I'm no Donald Trump, but could probably swing the swap. That being said, $12k into my kids 529 today will probably pay for a year of college in 15 yrs down the road! LOL.
Anyways, appreciate all the honest and practical responses, I think I really needed to hear them so I could get this crazy idea out of my head. However, I also am a firm believer that you can't have too many fast cars :D _tom |
1.Keep the E70 4.8
2.Buy the 2010 Nissan GT-R 3.Smoke the X5M on the road and take you e70 to ski End up faster, smarter, cheaper |

I traded this after 26 days and 1000 miles and took a bath but like was said life is short and you got to do what makes you happy. Now I am conflicted again as in trading my 2008 4.8 Sport for an M. Yeah I'll take another bath but if you can do it and it makes you happy do it. Well thats what I tell myself which makes me sleep better at night...

Don't do it man, 4.8i in my opinion looks miles better then M.
I too have 4.8i with 215's and H&R spring with aero kit, eventhough i'am going back to normal factory set up this week regarding the H&R! Without the running boards, and no fog lights, plus those ugly M wheels i don't think M looks better then such nice set up you have, so keep it and enjoy it. M guys please don't get mad at me for saying ugly wheels, i just can't get used to it yet! |

Don't pull the trigger on the new X5M yet, buddy. You have a great look ride there already. I would wait until your lease is up and pull the trigger by then. Just put that $12K in your bank or take a nice long vacation at Moorea and Bora Bora with your family...:D

$12K in loss on the X5 4.8 plus the cost difference on the X5M. I wouldn't do it that way. YMMV |
Not sure about the $12K. Trade in value's around here for an '08 4.8 loaded in great shape are running in the $50K realm. Thats more like a $20K hit. So really looking at a $40K difference figure on an M. I assume the $12K number was for buy out from the lease.
|
He leases and has 2 years left on his lease. Not sure where the $12K figure came from. His remaining payments have to be more than that unless he put $ down

Some people might like the (soon to be old) Celis. IMO new-gen is fugly. |
I'd say ride out your lease and then look when the new style comes out, re-evaluate and see if you like the changes. I've only seen the M-sport pics on the web for the 2011. Need to see what the 4.8i will look like and whether it'll get the new 4.4L twin turbo and the new style of RSE (where the screens are on the seat backs like the 7 series and new GT).
