Another 08 4.8i thinking about trading in...

Well I'm in the same boat as Trips! I have a 2008 4.8i beyond loaded with every possible option. I bought it in spring 09 and it currently has about 25,000km (15,500miles) on it. I could not wait until the end of the year for the ///M as I sold my last X5 and I was actually renting a car for two months. I gave my 5 series to my Dad to drive, and I wasn't about to ask for it back! Plus I had no idea at the time what the X5M would look like or what the pricing would be. Meanwhile I was getting a great deal on an 08 with every option, so I pulled the trigger!

Fast forward about six months and I can't sleep at night 'cos I keep thinking about the new ///M. I actually bought mine, not leased as the lease rates and residuals in Canada are ridiculous. So the dealer wants somewhere between 25K - 30K down to maintain the same monthly payment. Actual price difference between the two is approx 40K!

So I could put down 25K and bump up the pymt just a little OR I could keep the X5 and put that money towards a summer toy such as a used SL55 AMG or E55 AMG or M5 etc. Problem is I only have a two car garage and insurance will be about 3K/yr for the summer car alone! What to do?? :(

I guess I could advertise it privately and see if I get any bites...

As I posted in Trips thread; Keep in mind the X5 facelift on 2011 model and those changes happening on 2011 X5 M as well.

Are you sure? I highly doubt that they would change the X5M in 2011 just after releasing it in 2010! For Trips, it may be worth the wait since his lease is not up yet. As for me, the longer I wait the more mine will depriciate. I'm just wondering if it's worth paying the hefty difference after owning mine for only six months! My car really doesn't lack anything...except the 555hp! ;)

Well, it happened with M3 sedan. It got facelift E90 hood, tail lights etc. soon after release on very next model year. We have already seen on X5 spyshots that the facelift X5 has taillights graphics like that of new 7-series and 5 GT. BMW is also adding more colors on 2011 X ///M models.

Unfortunately you didn't wait. If you try to trade up you're going to get RAPED. In the same breath, you can't sleep thinking about the M.

I'd say, next six months, sit it out. There are no M cars available right now unless you want to pay a high price. I would wait until you could get a better deal on the M before even consider it.

I wouldn't expect dealers to have M's stocked anytime in the immediate future.

wait! once the facelifted version comes out you will be wondering why you sold it after 6months only. Wait for the newer version then pull the TRIGGER! just my .02, i ordered mine since i gave my 4.4 to my wife and have been using the train since, no car until its delievered...I need my M now...lol

I think you guys are being a little emotional about the ///M. As soon as you pull the trigger and sink an unheard of amount of money into it, you'll see an new option or color you want. If you could break even then it might be worth it. But the money you are talking about spending is way out there. Again this is my personal opinion and none of us can call your pockets. Only you know how this will impact you. I would rather get no sleep wanting the ///M as oppossed to getting no sleep thinking about the coin I laid down for a new piece of garage furniture.....Phil

I wouldn't do it - same answer I gave to Trip.

If you're swimming in cash, then go for it.. but $30K is a lot of (extra) coin for a once a day 555hp hit.

Feel good that you have 90% of the ///M in your 4.8

(well, maybe 80%) ;)

King 10-14-2009 11:40 AM

I think my situation is a little different from Trips. He has to pay 12K to get out of his lease PLUS the difference between the two vehicles. That could be a lot depending on how much they offer on a trade.

I am just looking at the straight difference on a trade. The price difference between a base 4.8i and a 'base' X5M in Canada is just over 25K. That difference is always going to be there whether I buy now or a year from now. I'm just afraid that if I wait a year, my 4.8 is going to be worth less and that price difference will only get wider! However if the ///M is really getting a facelift then it might be worth waiting although it's not going to make an difference financially.

Clean ride... what sort of price point will you be looking for? You can pm me directly. :)

TQ2K 10-14-2009 11:55 AM

Do you really need the HP or it's just the itch to have an X5 ///M? You got a really nice 4.8 and for the money you'd be losing you can actually get a really nice E39 ///M5... or an '06/'07 E60 ///M5...

I think more than anything else, it's the itch to have the new ///M. It's not like I 'need' it. After driving it, I was sold on it! :D

I still have the E39 540i M Exec. which I passed on to my Dad. I had an E39 M5, which I got rid of due to problems with it. The new M5, I'm not really sold on...if anything I would go for the E63 AMG! I've seen them listed anywhere from 40K - 50K for an 07 with low clicks.

Keep in mind I'm in Canada and the pricing structure here is quite different from the US. It would be less expensive for you to find one locally. It will cost you about 1.25 times more in Canada.

I understand what you're saying regarding the difference between your situation and Trips.

The way to calm yourself down is to look at this in the same light as any other technology purchase. As SOON as you jump on something, there will be something a little faster, shinier, sleeker, and just plain BETTER a few weeks later.

It's basically a certifiable way to drive yourself NUTS. Whatever latest toy you acquire will only be state-of-the-art for a short time. So with that in mind, there is no way in hell I would take the hit you mentioned and dump a fully loaded, basically new 2008 4.8i.

I would enjoy it for all it's worth, as if it were still 2008 and the X5///M has not yet come out. And only when you get to 60,000 miles or so would I start seeing what is state-of-the-art at that particular time and planning my next move. But that's me...If you've got cash to burn, then go for it.

:iagree:

2012 M5 will have more HP than these X///M.
Porsche is also working hard to get a faster Cayenne out.

send all the money to me and take the train.
