The new style BMW transmission lever..
Is it just me or is it a bit over complicated?
I mean, what was wrong with the last generation type that I had on the X5 4.8is. This thing, you have to push buttons, then you forget to push buttons and the cpu says, "push the button". Then you drive in D and you can upshift a gear but if you drive in D and downshift a gear it puts you in neutral. I mean, why fix it if it ain't broke. Just seems to me that the new gear shift is technology for the sake of technology but doesn't actually do anything better. Just makes stuff more complicated. p.s. - There's too many states now a days.. Can't we just have 46-47? Alaska, pffffft. |
I don't even think about it anymore. It's when I get into a loaner that has the old shift I get all screwed up. You'll get used to it.
What do you think about the new idrive? Granted, it's much faster but I don't like having to look down at the little buttons to switch modes. I thought having it on the screen was easier. |

I agree! I have the same gripe with our 2010 35d!

I alternate between BMWs with old style levers and new style levers every other day of the week. No complaints with it. The problem I have is when I am in my E53 and my finger is trying to press the non-existing start button. :D |

Hilarious. I make a point of poking the dashboard when I'm driving my wife's M Roadster, saying "jeez, there's something wrong with your stupid car - it won't start!!!" I think the next time I do it, it might mean bread and water for Mr. Happy for a week.... maybe more......... :p: |
definitely there "because they can"... I love it though, didn't take long to get used to.
When I get the 3-series loaners and see the shifter, I think it looks really dated... hate to say it, but something out of a low end car like a Corolla. |

Have to admit, lately I've been toying with the voice commands. It works okay. Just don't trial to dial by name or your phone will call your ex-girlfriend from high school whose phone number is still in your contact list.. - In other words.. You say, Jenn Smith and it starts calling Beth Miller???? WTF?? |

I'm pretty good at adapting to various vehicles, even non-BMWs. As long as there are symbols for everything, I'm okay. The problem starts when buttons are labeled with words.......for some reason pictograms just work better for me.
The new shifter is pointless and an answer to a question never asked. I prefer moving a lever instead of "toggling" a lever that springs back to the original position, reminiscent of the now-standard-issue indicator and wiper stalks. But like those other two items, I can deal with it without hassle. My quirks: When I get into my mom's 325i, I take the key and try to jam it into the side of the steering column . Oh right, it's a button. When I put a car in to reverse, my left foot goes down into empty space. Oh right, there's no clutch on our Bimmers. When I drive a car with one of those stupid foot pedal brakes, I put the car in Park, then search everywhere for a lever to pull on the dash. Ditto for BMWs with the electronic P brake. |
