Your Speedometer?

On your X5M, does the speedometer read 4 MPH faster than actual speed? Mine has and does. Got a ticket today for 88mph from an airplane!

I would be surprised if it was only 4 mph out. BMW designs speedometers to read optimistic by about 4% + a few mph, so that they will never be liable for a speedometer reading too low.

Edit: EC Regulation 39 (speedometer accuracy) states that a speedometer may never read low, and that the indicated speed must be no more than (true speed x 1.1) + 4 km/hr. Due to production tolerances, tire size variances, etc, manufacturers will use a portion of that tolerance to ensure they never read low. BMW speedometers have long been considered some of the least accurate out there, by design.

Got a 2011 X6M... Funny u mention this... I was passing one of those radar signs that tells u your going too fast and I actually though to myself that it seemed to be 4 mph lower than what my dash said.

No ///M but my 4.8 always reads 2mph faster than what radar signs and my gps linked detector says. Funny side note, I have been told lamborghinis read something like 10mph faster, which in turn runs the odometer up faster and leaves owners out of warranty 10% faster.

Mine is also 4mph fast. I figured this with both an airport radar sign and calculating a 10 mile run via the stopwatch.

The rules call for a % variation (on the high side) of the speedometer. Their is a built-in adjustment factor. Odometers read accurately.

The OBC shows the correct speed, which is there the odometer is calculated from. Since I've relocated my OBC to my glovebox, I use the the navi screen to show the exact speed I'm going. I just always go 5mph on the speedo, knowing I'm really only doing like 2-3 over.
