Is towing with the M really ok?
From what I've read, BMW does not recommend towing with the M. I heard it's because the transmission is not rated for towing. With that being said, I know some people do it anyways.
What are peoples feelings on this? What are the limits of the X5 M with towing capacity? |
What does the Manual say?

Is there even a hitch sold for it? I am sure that there is no replacement diffuser for the rear bumper to accommodate the hitch.

BMW does recommend towing with the X5M. They list Trailer Stability Control (same as the regular X5) in the X5M press release. They have information about towing capacity (6000 lbs) on bmw.com. They just appear to not have a hitch available that is DOT approved (for North America), but that is likely just a matter of time. If I was guessing, I would say that the exhaust interferes with the standard hitch, but that is just a swag.
The oe euro hitch for the X5M looks really nice, fully electric. I see no reason why the transmission would have any issues, given that it can handle the torque of the X5M at full throttle and you will be unlikely to be towing at that rate. |
