Very nice, congrats

m5james 11-10-2010 03:59 PM

Nice, now you just need to get the Merc outa the way so you can go enjoy it. Why the change of wheels?

StanF18 11-10-2010 05:00 PM

SWEET!

What did the ECU flash do?

Also, with those 21-inchers: you may want to do a search for a thread I saw recently on here, on ///Ms getting their lower fender paint bombarded with road chips. The lower panels on these beauties are getting sandblasted as quickly as 3,000 miles. A lot of pissed-off X5///M owners. Something to do with the combination of the wide wheels and the aerodynamic flow of the body lines. A few guys went with mud flaps for the front wheels, others 3M'd the whole lower portion of the vehicle, including wheel arches and doors. Don't know if either one is a permanent solution, but it's better than leaving the paint completely naked. I would do it soon, especially with snow and salt right around the corner.

Haha, very true! I barely drive it anymore but still love it, for now! I changed the wheels cause i just didnt like the stock ones, thought these looked much better, esp. with the red color.

The ECU flash, as i was told, gave me 85hp/100tq, approx. I dont have a dyno though to confirm that. Yes i am starting to see some road chips on the bottom of the fenders/panels! Next spring i will be probably be repainting those areas and front bumber and installing 3M over the front and any portion that could be affected, but it might be smart to do it now before having the deal with repainting!

Is your ECU flash from BMW or where?

E53is 11-11-2010 01:28 AM

3m it

Congrats! Not a fan of the 215's but love the color. I believe there's a member here with a nicely modded white X5Monster in your neck of the woods.

Happy motoring :driver:

I wouldn't trust valets with my dinky little 4.4, let alone an ///M :wow: I've seen WAY too many videos of idiots and what they do when it's not their vehicle.

chilliwilli 11-11-2010 04:09 PM

Does your ECU have to be reflashed back to stock before going into the dealer for warranty work?

I know what you mean, i always have them park it right in the front and tip them good. I also know some of them now and they take care of me, never had a single problem. Most of the places i go to have many more expensive cars than mine as well lol! But its still a risk, the one time i decided not to valet it (mostly cause i was only gonna stay for an hr) was the time i got keyed! It was terrible and cost a lot to fix but looks just new again, thankfully!

The guy who did it said it wouldn't have to be, and to just let the dealer or better yet the mechanic know it is so they do not reflash it back to stock. He said i get 1 free reflash though if they do! I wish my friend was still a mechanic at bmw to help me out, hopefully he knows someone that could help me out there! Don't feel like losing my warranty..lol

LI-X5 11-11-2010 07:34 PM

I agree with this as well. I had my M5 repainted from head to toe, took almost 2 months. Not more than 10 minutes from the shop some idiot in a Ranger swerved onto the shoulder and I got my first rockchip...I was so pissed. Having a shop touchup any chips now will cost less now vs waiting after it's been beatin up for a season.

x5m-rs4_fan 11-14-2010 04:22 PM

Do not wait until next spring to protect those areas...you will have serious damage within 1000 miles.

Thank you, i really do love this color!

I had the factory 20" rims painted and use them for snow tires. Works great.

Good idea, maybe i will paint them black and use them during winter while saving my 21" rims from any damage! Yet again its not an everyday car as i have a couple trucks for winter time.

Yeah, no joke. Be careful with that, some dealers can be very "hard up" about voiding of the warranty when there's 3rd party software installed. Hopefully you'll find a BMW contact who is relaxed enough to "let it slide". I would test the waters ahead of time, sort of like "Yeah, I got this friend who got a software re-tune on his new BMW, what's your guys' stance on servicing a vehicle like that?"
It's bad enough getting your warranty nullified by 1 dealer, but I would imagine once they enter your VIN into the system there's a risk that other dealers will also know about it.

m5james 11-16-2010 03:17 PM

Start testing the waters and that's the first thing I'd check for after you walked away. IF you're going to ask that question, I'd call the SA anonymously over the phone and ask, not in person.

LI-X5 11-20-2010 07:23 PM

i know my sa is very cool about these things , his motto is as loong as it didnt cause the prob' then its not a prob !! lemme know i can introdruce you to him , they an awesome dealer to deal with !

Ok that sounds good, i definately need a good dealer to work with! Thanks

chilliwilli 11-23-2010 10:45 AM

That gray area with BMW & tunes is the only reason i prefer to stick with Dinan...there have been far enough experiences with vehicle issues , in which BMW themselves can't seem to drill down to the root cause...such as the faults some are currently experiencing on their new XM's. My thoughts are that it's easy enough to attribute certain failures on a new XM, with non-BMW-approved tune, to the tune itself. Not sure what warranty or policy is offered with your flash, should such an unfortunate case present itself.

The Euro shops (2) that have managed my Dinan tunes, offer to reinstall or re-flash back to Dinan spec should a dealer mistakenly erase...for free, anytime.
