X6M on Top Gear US

Weasel 01-18-2011 02:09 PM

Amazing beast to say the least. (hey look, that rhymed! :)) I like the names they were coming up with at the end too.

mswaz 01-18-2011 02:56 PM

Is this on tonight's episode?

cmyX6go 01-18-2011 03:13 PM

I'm  Come to mama....

Naz24 01-18-2011 03:20 PM

Ahhh amazing! I want one so bad, it's my justification for a higher education!

motordavid 01-18-2011 03:58 PM

Cool test vid, and it is a 'Relativity Dodging' car, :D
If I won the lotto, lived part-time in a wide open western state,
and had a gas station every 200 miles, it would be a fun ride. ;)

Are those guys on that show dorks, or what?

:iagree: That version of the show is kind of hard to watch. Also, on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the most desired, I would personally rate the X6M at about a 3. :dunno:

Dannyell 01-18-2011 04:55 PM

there is only one top gear :D and this is not it ;)

I believe this to be season 1 episode 8, 1/9/11 original air date. It also featured a Panamera Turbo and Ferrari California.

Not many things are as good as the original...it's all about the autos for me.

Rez 01-18-2011 06:07 PM

cheesy...

998M 01-18-2011 06:33 PM

The show has been painful but I really liked watching the X6M be pounded around the test track. Amazing to see how it cornes to flat.

How the producers allowed the TopGear brand to become associated with those losers is beyond me.

MONEY

The bad thing is one of the guys on the US version is actually a pretty funny comedian, I just saw one of his specials on comedy central the other day. How he landed this gig I have no idea, he never struck me as a car guy in any other media.

motordavid 01-18-2011 09:18 PM

But, that US Top Gear 'version' of the show, dorks included, seems to be in keeping with the 'usual' mass market approach to 'cars', here in the Colonies, imo.

I think we sometimes lack empathy that while we are blistering through pages of Boards like this one, chock full of some very smart & very technically adroit, and at the least, enthusiastic people, that much of the car buying public is reading Yahoo Auto snippets and dreading laying out those $300 a month payments for a 'new car'.

I'm not male model or professional talking head, but I know I could stand up there and do a better job than the lumberjack wannabe in the middle or the guy on 'ludes on the left,

NEway, cool X-type car that BMW was able to parts bin assemble, but $100Gs and 9 mpg is not my cup of go jo...

Those Euro's with wooden teeth are annoying. Maybe if they mixed in some toothpaste, they wouldn't be so disturbing to watch in HD

Naz24 01-19-2011 09:45 AM

It just seems scripted huh?

That and the fact it is lacking personality. The original version seems genuine, the US version seems really forced.

Weasel 01-19-2011 08:14 PM

The problem is the US version has comics trying to act like serious car guys while the UK version has serious car guys trying to act like comics.

I saw a very mildly entertaining Topgear US episode yesterday where they were testing for the "toughest american truck" between a 70's ford, 80's chevy and 90's dodge. With a set up toyota hi-lux following them to collect the people when the trucks fell apart. The problem is none of them seemed to know anything about mechanics or how to drive a-in ANY of the offroad conditions...

It seems like the new US version of top gear has hosts who are lost in their rolls. That's how I feel when I watch it :dunno:

Weasel 01-19-2011 08:19 PM

Adam Ferrara is a pretty damn funny comic if you see him on comedy central... but not knowing enough about cars kinda zaps his comic ability on that show. I don't know anything about the other 2 guys.

J.Belknap 01-19-2011 11:09 PM

Just can't stomach the US version. I gave it an honest try. :(

Weasel 01-19-2011 11:13 PM

Yeah, I think I'll stick with Stacy David's gears on speed and Spike's powerblock for my car shows.... I can wake up with a hangover, watch the powerblock and still want to work on anything with an engine.

That about sums it up...wouldn't be surprised if ratings starved exec's used viewer success, or lack thereof, of the other spin-offs as a metric to greenlight this version. It may not appeal to most of us but it may maintain it's ratings share and stay on-air (hopefully with better cast/hosts).

IMO, they should've stuck with Bruno Massel and a comedian that at least has an obvious propensity for autos...the third spot could be a rotational of real aficionados...i.e. Seinfeld, Leno, Dr. Kay Segler, Bob Lutz etc...

Anyhoo...0-60 in under 4 sec

Weasel 01-20-2011 02:06 PM

I like that idea of using Bruno Massel, and like the idea of the third spot being a rotation of high profile aficionados like that. If only it were easier to pitch ideas like that to the people in charge....
