From M5 specs document: Active Sound Design delivers precise feedback. M5 drivers will be given an even more direct reminder of their car’s performance capability by technology that brings the distinctive sound of the high-performance V8 – in all its glory – into the cabin of the new BMW M5. The Active Sound Design technology specially developed for the new BMW M5 takes its cues from the driving situation at any one time to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engine’s sound through the car’s audio system. The system’s digital signal processing exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to reflect the engine’s revs and torque, and the car’s speed over the road. The result over a smoothly driven journey is a discreet soundtrack in keeping with the harmonious and assured characteristics of the V8 powerplant. A stamp on the accelerator, meanwhile, prompts an immediate audible response to match the instantaneous – and typically M – burst of power from beneath the bonnet. In generating its signals, Active Sound Design takes its cues from the firing sequence of the eight-cylinder engine and the frequency range of the exhaust system. This gives the driver an extremely accurate impression of current engine load and an even more intense sensation of the V8’s high-performance characteristics. At the same time the Active Sound Design control unit ensures an even spread of sound across all five seats of the new BMW M5, while observing the legal guidelines governing noise emissions inside and outside the car. The characteristics of the sound produced by the technology also adjust to the engine settings selected by the driver. For example, switching to “Sport” or “Sport+” mode sharpens not only the engine’s responsiveness but also the acoustic experience inside the car. |

What's up headlights ?
|
Looks good. Muscular and aggressive looking M3.
The first thing that comes to mind though looking at it from the side and the back - it's a baby M5! Another thing, that M3 looks perfect driving through the slushy melting snow! A perfect place to test the performance sedan. Right! |

F80 M3 being followed by 1M coupe on Autobahn. 1M coupe is tuned to 420 HP and has Akrapovic exhaust.

Looks very nice and powerful.
Not too different from the previous model, which is good. The power is estimated at around 430hp. Guess it won't be as fast as the M5. |

The M3 has never been as fast as the M5 in a straight line. |

That is great news. I personally like the M3(4) being powered by an inline 6 cylinder engine. Can't wait to hear it. I like the deep sound of the V8, but the stock exhaust on the e9x's are too tame and muted for my taste. I have driven an e90 with stock exhaust and an e92 competition package with an Active exhaust and difference was night and day. As fast as the e9x's are, my e46 sounds like a wound up chainsaw on meth that is giving 110% at all times. I never got that feeling in the e9x.

I like V8s though :s

Twin turbo I6 engine and a water-to-air intercooler on new M3
http://media.il.edmunds-media.com/bm..._91312_815.jpg http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-global/dims...t12priddy3.jpg http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-global/dims...t12priddy4.jpg http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-global/dims...t12priddy5.jpg http://o.aolcdn.com/dims-global/dims...t12priddy1.jpg Just the Facts: •BMW is testing the new M3 with a twin-turbo inline-6. •This prototype features a water-to-air intercooler. •The new engine is predicted to produce more than 400 horsepower. SANTA MONICA, California — Every so often, prototype drivers and vehicle engineers have to open the hood, and when they do, spy photographers pounce. Especially when the hood being opened is that of the 2014 BMW M3. It has been known for quite some time that the 2014 BMW M3 would not carry on the current car's naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V8. Instead, BMW had to come up with something smaller and more efficient. And that likely meant forced induction. Rumors have been swirling about what form that engine would take: Turbo V6? Turbo inline-6? Supercharged V6? Each rumor had its own reasoning behind it, but the most talked-about prediction was a straight-6 with three turbochargers providing the boost. It sounded exotic at first, but then BMW unleased its 3.0-liter triple turbodiesel in the 550d. But now we have actual photos of the M3, and the engine bay tells a different story. We're not 100 percent certain, but it looks like this engine has a twin-turbo setup, mostly likely feeding BMW's 3.0-liter inline-6. Our in-house turbo expert also notes that this setup appears to have a water-to-air intercooler similar to BMW's larger-displacement twin-turbo V8s. The current N55 turbo I6 uses an air-to-air intercooler. The addition of an extra turbocharger should give this six enough punch to go well over the 400-horsepower mark. I know what Turbo is coming into my X5s i6 ;)

From Autoblog:
Horsepower in the F80 M3 and F82 M4 is said to be close to that of the E90/E92, which was rated at 414 hp. This contrasts with previous reports that had horsepower pegged closer to 450. It should also be noted that BMW has been known to underrate the horsepower values for its engines. That said, the new turbocharged straight-six will supposedly develop 100 more pound-feet of torque over the current generation, too. The 4.0-liter S65 V8 found in the E90/E92 M3 developed 295 lb-ft, putting the new engine's torque in the 395 lb-ft neighborhood. We can live with that. An equally interesting development regards the proposed weight of the new Ultimate Driving Machine. Apparently BMW is targeting the curb weight of the E46 M3. That older-generation Bimmer clocked in at about 3,400 pounds, while the E90/E92 M3 had grown to over 3,700 pounds. The 300-pound weight savings should come as welcome news to M3 purists, critical of the progressive weight gains from generation to generation. For those interested in the aesthetic of the next performance-Bimmer, the F80/F82 update of the M3 is claimed to feature a more aggressive look, highlighted by a power bulge hood and larger fenders. That styling direction should not come as much of a surprise, as the more aggressive appearance is customary to the M3 by now and matches what we've seen in spy shots. According to source, the F80 M3 sedan will debut first and come to market in early 2014. It will be followed by the M4 coupe, though exact timing was not revealed. |
