Bouncing off rev limiter
I have made the mistake of putting the car in manual mode when pushing the car, and then accidentally forgetting to switch causing me to bounce off the rev limiter for a couple of secs.
Is this crazy bad for the car? Any of you other guys done it? I remember my 05 4.8is pretty sure even in manual mode it would still switch once you have it the rev limit. |
I have owned several dozen cars, and a dozen m'cycles, over the decades. There probably isn't one of them that hasn't had the red line bounced a couple times. Doesn't mean I rec'd it, but it happens, esp with a manual trans or, in 'manual mode'.
Be glad you have a rev limiter...your car isn't mine, but I wouldn't worry about a couple of instances, imo. GL, mD |
It doesn't sound good when it bouncing off the limiter. And I'm sure prolonged engine revving at redline isn't good. But hitting it during the occasional manual shift driving won't hurt it.

The rev limiter is exactly that is limits the revs, but most after market tunes raises the rev limiter even higher. So I would not worry about it.
It's one thing I like about the M, is that when you are in manual mode you really are and the computer will not interfere and try to shift for you when it thinks you should shift. |
Exponential bearing wear is the byproduct, but hitting the rev limiter every once in a while over the life of the car probably doesn't amount to much. It is the forced downshifts in a MT car where engine speed and gear selection don't match up, aka, the 'money shift' that can cause one-time event damage.
