Just bought a used X5M....

Hello,
I'm new here and I love this forumn. I just bought a used 2012 X5M. It has fairly high mileage but I plan on buying the extended warranty.
So here is my problem. 200 miles from where I bought it form I get this message. "Engine operating at reduced output. Possible to continue. Drive with caution. Have the system checked at the nearest BMW center."
It felt like I was driving on 4 cylinders instead of 8

Has anyone else got this message and should I bet concerned? I took it to the dealership and they replaced the fuel pump.
TIA for any help!!!

you had the problem, it was fixed, and NOW you are concerned about a problem you no longer have?

Just get a warranty, preferably a BMW-backed plan and NOT a fly-by-night third party

What kind of mileage are we looking at?

Yes it was fixed, but just concerned as it is a high performance vehicle. Plus it happened right after I bought it. BMW in Madison fixed it, drove to Charlotte and it happened again. I stopped at a gas station and turned the vehicle off. Started it back up and it the check engine light went away. Now its running good again. I have an appointment at Hendrick BMW next Wednesday to have it checked again

Welcome to the board, good to see that there is another X5M in the Charlotte, NC area. I've only seen one other.

Sorry to hear about your issue, sounds like "Limp Mode". This will happen when the systems receives a code that could create major damage to the car. What codes did they pull?

30,000 miles on a 2012 sounds like a lot of miles for a very short period of time.

I'm going to guess that you used some poor quality gasoline during your trip. These engines and especially the highly tuned M are sensitive to gas quality and additives. Since the fuel pump was replaced, I'm guessing the dealer found some codes associated with fuel delivery. It may not have been the pump but he changed it anyway. I recommend you only use premium gas from reputable places.

I did use 93 premium gas. I owned 3 M3's before this ride. you might be correct that it could be bad gas... I was in the corn crop part of the country. Well, it is at the dealership now.

I will post results.

Thanks!! hope to meet some other owners in the future! You are correct, it is a high amount of miles. Its the only way I could get into a X5M. I got a great deal. Vehicle warranty started 8 months ago. I purchased the extended warranty through Hendrick BMW, so I should be good for some time now. I love the vehicle!! The inside is in immaculate condition. Side skirts had some road rash that I will get cleaned up. It has been my dream vehicle for the past 3 years.
