Press Release PDF

The Bavarian automaker’s X1 Concept will make its formal world premier at the Paris Motor Show in a few days time, but as often is the case the first official photos hit the web a bit earlier. Strip away those aluminum inserts on the X1 Concept and you can easily tell that what you see here is what you’ll get in late 2009 when BMW releases the production version of its baby SUV –slash- Crossover that will sit right under the X3 competing against the likes of the Toyota RAV-4 and VW Tiguan.

And now to our beloved subject when it comes to new BMWs: the styling. Well, let's put it this way; the X1 does stand out but for all the wrong reasons. The X1’s concave body surfacing and fussy detailing bring to mind the X3 and X5 while the front end with the large headlights and oversize kidney grilles are apparently inspired from the new 7-Series. Overall the X1 is no beauty when it comes to design.

I hope it looks better in person for its own sake.

trueX5er 09-30-2008 11:21 PM

I like the style a lot, but that color is dreadful.

I wish they would make something between the X3 and E70. I would like something E53 sized.

autoque 10-01-2008 01:33 AM

The rear lamps gave me a jolt!:wow: :yikes:

autoque 10-01-2008 02:32 AM

I hear that X1 is not based on 1-series but E90 3-Series platform...

cosmos 10-01-2008 01:15 PM

I dont get it? Why continue to keep the X3 now?

I see the viability and appeal of the X1 as a small SUV and of coruse the X5, but keeping the X3 just makes no sense to me in the line up.

ChesterX5 10-01-2008 03:10 PM

[quote=trueX5er]I like the style a lot, but that color is dreadful.

:iagree: Looks good and actually quite 'large'. Also agree with other comments must be getting close to X3? Thus expect next gen X3 to grow in size too but not offer 7 seats to clash with E70 X5.

Looking forward to the show pics, please a black or silver car. No gold or fashionale white......

Hmmm...hard to believe that's the final cut.

I liked the orig concept a lot better, but
maybe it was too swoopy and the front/rear
end clips wouldn't fit. Sorta like the Universal
GM car of the '80s: just bolt on the end caps.

Hope it has a 6MT, sport, big wheels&tars and
one can delete the UltraCool Biff&BuffyGizmo packages...
and, it doesn't go out the door for $50Gs.
BR,mD

mmmm...I didn't like the idea of the 7 series styling in the front of this X1...the rear is good...

but I don't understand...which segment this car will be in? it looks bigger than expected, right?

Segment below X3. ;)

Wheel base is similar to 3-series though
E91 3er: 4,527mm x 1,817mm x 1,418mm x 2,760mm
E84 X1 : 4,457mm x 1,789mm x 1,535mm x 2,760mm
E83 X3 : 4,569mm x 1,853mm x 1,674mm x 2,795mm

ron_jeremy 10-02-2008 11:50 AM

Guess it's safe to say that the new F25 (am i correct?) Is going to be bigger than the current model.
Almost like a E53 i guess?
In Europe, this baby is going to sell like hotcakes imo.
It's a Rav4 size, and that's what's sell these days.
:D

That's where the target market is.

Me too. Can you say "Dodge RAM"?

I like most everything EXCEPT the big-azz nose. It sticks out too much. Something more akin to the X3 would look much better.

Ishniknork 10-02-2008 10:36 PM

This looks MUCH Better...

...This front end would look a lot better. In fact, I think this whole concept rendering looks MUCH better.

ron_jeremy 10-03-2008 02:31 AM

I like the ass, but the front and the kidney, looks a size to big for this car imo, but i guess it's a reason behind it, likely it's because of pedestrians, a higher nose, means less damage to this group.
I'd rather have the manufactor think of MY safety, rather than some numbnuts walking places they never should've imo!
:dunno:

I read on at least two occasions that X1 is based on the E90 3-series.

Below is a quote from Edmunds.com
"An early promotional video viewed by Inside Line reveals that BMW is targeting its latest SUV at a much younger audience than its existing models. The sloping tailgate treatment certainly points at a vehicle that places good looks over load-carrying capacity. Dimensionally, the X1 is close to the 3 Series Touring — a Europe-market wagon version of BMW's most successful model — on which the X1 is largely based."

And here is the worldcarfans.com saying it;
"The underpinings of the model are actually derived from the E90 3-Series platform, contrary to previous reports that it shares the same platform as the current generation 1-Series."

Are you sure Palbay you're not mistaken this time?:nanana:  :D

palbay 10-03-2008 04:31 PM

Here is a quote from a gentleman who works for BMW AG in Munich concerning the X1 platform. He was involved w/ the development of the car from the ground up. Thanks! PalBay

The MINI will be clothed in a small Compact and adventurous take on the MINI's styling with the famous MINI grille becoming much enlarged.
Although this car will share a platform with MINI it is not Same architechture different body style.

The MINI's drivetrain will be programmed differently likewise the X1.

The MINI will definetely not be called "Moke" Some Proposals feature the Clubmans Club door access. These proposals featured labeling the "MINI Clubman X" , Some called the MINI "Four" . One thing is certain though is that BMW do not want to use the Cooper name with the MINI SAV although engines will remain the same. The preference is more to "lifestyle" packages.

Also greenlighted today was a Small Z Roadster. Think a modern interpretation of the BMW Z1 - Elegant, compact and dynamically sporty - a modern interpretation of the Z1 Concept.

Why the expansion of smaller focused performance and lifestyle orientated cars?

In this segment sales are rocketing and projected sales are even expected to increase as people downsize and more younger enthusiasts come to the market. The 1er Coupe and Cabrio are the first step but there are many, many more to come. Including BMW's much talked about "City Concept for the Future" I have never seen so many eyes light up when the the sketches were unveiled.

alright alright good for you:thumbup:
