Power steering just suddenly
One day suddenly the power steering is "gone" I mean the 04 never gave me problems just came back from a day long trip. Cranked her up in the middle of the day yesterday and began to steer out of the garage and...wheel bearly turns...last week I checked the atf fluid and it was clean...heck I changed that fluid maybe a year ago! What gives? On quick inspection I couldn't see if the pimp was spinning.
The belt is basically new put it on at the start of the year. Could the pump just have given up the ghost? No warning signs? It doesn't squil... Have had the car not a good 2 years...rides nice just hit 200k at the middle of the month...maybe it's the matter of simply changing the pump? Your thoughts? Sent from my SM-J727T using Tapatalk |
Wrong fluid?
Why would you check the ATF if your power steering is gone. Check the power steering fluid not the transmission fluid. BMW uses very special power steering fluid (CF-11S hydraulic fluid). If you have been substituting transmission fluid in the power steering reservoir that will explain your failure.

The early e83s use ATF for PS fluid.[emoji41]

Bad Info
Don't know where you got your info, but according to the online BMW TIS (Technical Information System) it calls for CF-11S for even the earliest E83's. ATF is not a suitable substitute.

I now know if I can rely on your comments for the future...or not. For those readers seeking a conclusion to the problem (and not negative discourse) the pump simply died...how can you tell?. drain the ATF (in this case) from the reservoir, shine light into reservoir, if you should see movement from the ATF (and you should) then pump is working... No circulation?...pump is dead. Replacement is in order. However, there are two versions sold make sure you order the correct version on the car. If not, you'll have to order and replace the existing pressure lines to fit the upgraded pump. Sent from my SM-J727T using Tapatalk |
My apologies
I don't mean to come off as a know it all. I just was suggesting a real reason for your power steering failure. Perhaps I am wrong. Maybe you has an odd-ball unit. Please feel free to check for the correct fluid yourself at: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/
Getty150, you can put your VIN in and know exactly what to use. I only checked a generic pre LCI gas engined E83. AceEngineer  |

Is this thread about finding a problem, or some kind of test, or is it instructional ???

Replaced PS pump
Not a bad job, but not the easiest. Replaced the ps pump the other day...04 never gives me any problems but it did just hit 200k in the last 30 days. No codes, no leaks, no whining....just NO Steering. Pretty straight forward job...had to widen the brace a tad bit after about an hour of agonizing over the fit,,,but hey another $300 in my pocket. Ran into a problem with spacing even after removal of the air snorkel (not the air box) and fan. Had to remove the tention pulley just to get to, to remove one of the two bolt for the ps pump brace. Most of the work was done from the top. Used the same ring clip for the hose. Ordered a reservoir just to reward 04 for hitting 200k. Used a lot of cardboard for spillage probably lost about 3/4 of a bottle of ATF . A couple of days ago I replace the power steering reservoir. Sent from my SM-J727T using Tapatalk |
