new exhaust on the way

phuck it... I'm pulling the trigger on a "custom" exhaust this Friday. I'm getting a Magnaflow muffler put in at a shop in Van Nuys, CA. I'm going dual in, single out with a polished double walled tip.

Shop is Super Tuning Performance. http://www.supertuningperformance.com/index.html. After reading some threads over at e46fanatics.com several different people recomended this place. Went in today, talked with the owner Koko and the parts will be in on Friday. :woot:

Review and pics will follow.

Interesting. I'm contemplating doing a similar mod on my 330xi. Are you removing the resonator?

Can I guess you are going cat-back? What size pipes? Can't wait for pics and a review!

I'm not removing the resonator. At least for now. ;)

I'm also not going cat-back either (which would mean removing the resonator).

Baby steps for me on this. I don't want any drone in the cabin at freeway cruising speeds.

Good stuff. I thought the same thing.

Any reason for the single pipe instead of the two pipe exit?

Magnaflows' 2 in/2 out mufflers are too far apart (pipes in/pipes out). Tips would be about 2" from each other, not like how they are on the factory muffler. That's why I went with 2 in/1 out. I also wanted to keep the flow from the two pipes that way until the muffler.

Okay, here are the pix…

Didn't get a chance to take a pic of the two mufflers next to each other but you can get an idea of how much smaller the Magnaflow is…

Initial impressions:

I was worried it would be too loud after talking with some people and their experience with Magnaflows and BMW's inline-6. However, it's perfect; in fact, it maybe too quiet right now. With the windows rolled up it's only slightly louder around 1500 rpms than with the "golf tee" mod - there is a slight drone. Other than that, above 2k rpms I don't notice it. Now, with the windows down, it's whole different story. VERY nice rumble. Set off some alarms in the parking lot at Target (had to make a stop).

I have to give it some time though. Koko told me it will get slightly louder and deeper in about a week or so.

The real test will be tomorrow: freeway cruising speeds. But my initial thoughts are it's not going to be a problem (drone).

Price for muffler, tip and installation: $240. The cool part was Koko painted the muffler black. Makes it look REALLY good IMO. He did a great job.

Looks great! I like the black-out on the muffler body. Any chance you can do a sound (video) clip after it breaks in?
